Hi! I'm currently studying gorillas and colobus monkeys, and was wondering what zoos you all have personally seen gorillas living with. I've seen gorillas w/ patas monkeys, colobus monkeys, and pygmy goats but are there currently others? Thanks
London zoo are introducing colobus monkeys at the moment. I think Valencia Bioparc has gorillas with sitatunga and some guenon species, I can't remember which.
Detroit Zoo's Great Apes of Harambee features gorillas, two male drills, one female mandrill, and a Diana Monkey.
Fuengirola Zoo has a pair of gorillas mixed with De Brazza's monkeys, southern ground hornbills and Egyptian geese. Bristol Zoo mixes its gorillas with De Brazza's monkeys as well.
I know that in Howletts wild animal park , Aspinall kept 2 pairs of 2 guenon species i think they were spot nosed monkeys and also Saramago monkeys within an enclosure with a breeding group of western lowland gorrillas, they are still there i geuss but i cannot be sure as i havent visited for many years
Should we ask why not??? I'm thinking in terms of protein so please correct me if I'm wrong! Ditto the pygmy goats.
No not because of that lol. I think one of the guenons is diabetic so the mix was stopped, not sure about the saramango monkeys though.
Yes, Gorilla Haven is where you can see 0.2 Pygmy goats w/ 1.0 gorillas. Some of these are interesting thanks!
This is a very interesting thread. Toronto may be getting another species to be exhibited with the gorillas, should be interesting to see what they'll get
some of these are very unusual mixes, not only from the point of view of being risky for the non-gorilla species (one would think) but also simply from the perspective of the animals living in vastly different habitats to gorillas in the wild (eg meerkats or klipspringers)
I believe Munster(Germany) has Gorillas with Red capped Mangabeys. Gaia Park(or somewhere) has Gorillas and Black Mangabeys. These Gorilla/primate mixes are not always 100% successful; individual male Gorillas have killed monkeys they were mixed with(e.g. at Melbourne and Port Lympne)
At Bioparc I see (in different days) the gorillas living with: white-crowned mangabeys, owl-faced guenons, Abyssinian hornbills and sitatungas and probably in a near future with some duiker species.
