Why only 2 species to choise ??? There are actualy so many species and among them some realy rare ones. From conservation point of view I would like to see some breeding White-eared herons at several zoos. Just for their beauty I would love to see some captive Capped herons and also the Agami heron seems to be a very nice species to see !
What's the context? Where are we seeing this hypothetical heron? Why are we restricted to only seeing one? I saw both species feeding together recently in central Florida. They were both quite attractive looking birds. Am I the only one who's a little confused?
@Ituri: you aren't the only one. Some rather peculiar threads popping up recently... If I could suggest a heron species I'd like to see: the Bennu heron (Ardea bennuides)
Here is a complete list of Heron Species around the world I wonder how many of these are in captivity. Grey Heron, Great blue heron, Cocoi heron, White necked heron, Great white egret, Easter great heron, Intermediate egret, Black headed heron, Madagascan heron, White bellied heron, Sumatran, Goliath heron, Purple heron, Cattle egret, Green heron, Striated heron, Squacco heron, Indian pond heron, Chinese pond heron, Javan pond heron, Madagascan pond heron, Rufous-bellied heron, Reddish egret, Pied heron, Slaty heron, Black heron, Tricoloured heron, White faced heron, Little blue heron, Snowy egret, Little egret, Chinese egret, Eastern reef heron, Whistling heron, capped heron, Yellow-crowned night heron, Black-crowned night heron, Rufous night heron, white backed night heron, White–eared night heron, Japanese night heron, Malayan night heron, South American bittern, North American bittern, Eurasian bittern, Australasian bittern, Streaked bittern, Least bittern, Little bittern, Yellow bittern, Schrenck’s bittern, Cinnamon bittern, Dwarf bittern, Black bittern, Zigzag heron, Bare-throated tiger heron, Fasciated tiger heron, Rufescent tiger heron, New guinea tiger heron, White-crested tiger heron, Agami heron, Boat billed heron & Sun-bittern The above list should not contain any sub-species, I guess this is why there are only 2 species in voting table but I would love to know how many of these species are now (today) in captive collections around the world (please don’t say check Zooterliste as it is unfortunately out of date with many bird species information).
To clarify, I was having a silly conversation with a friend who said the snowy egret was a more attractive species than the tricolored heron, and I disagreed. That's all. Sorry I didn't provide that clarification earlier. Out of all the herons, my personal favorite is probably the goliath heron.
