This is a list of my top ten but that does not mean I think these are the ten best as such. My list of the world's 'best' zoos would be different to my list of 'favourite' zoos. And, of course, I would only ever list those of which I have had personal experience. East Berlin West Berlin Budapest (for the architecture) Marwell (sentimental reasons) Edinburgh San Diego Zoo Overloon (my favourite 'small' zoo) London (historical reasons) Wroclaw (favourite out-dated zoo) Walsrode (favourite specialist collection) Sorry orang09, but how could you list the antichrist of the zoo world, Monkeyworld, as your first choice?
LOL thats the harshest description I've ever heard of monkeyworld! They just want to give some abused primates a nice life, that's okay right? Plus their siamang and woolly monkey exhibits are some of the best captive environments I've seen for these species.
But Monkey World is not a zoo at least thats what the late Jim Cronin told me as he was arguing with me that all zoo`s are wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I'd love to be able to paticipate in this thread! Unfortunately it would be unprofessional and potentially quite dangerous.
My zoo list is aprox this: 1. Rotterdam Zoo (Dierenpark Blijdorp) 2. Burgers Zoo 3. Hannover Zoo 4. Tierpark Hellabrunn (Munich) 5. Odense Zoo 6. Cologne Zoo 7. Randers Regnskov Tropical Zoo 8. Duisburg Zoo 9. Ree Park – Ebeltoft Safari 10. Dierenpark Plankendael I cant see what anyone could have against Monkey World. The rehabilitate monkeys and apes, breed endangered species such as wooly monkyes and orangs, and all of the enclosures are big and interesting. They are also members of the EAZA.
It IS a 'zoo' at least in the traditional meaning of the word. People pay an aqdmission fee to go and look at animals on display, irrespective of them being rescued primates(not all of them are anyway, some have come from other zoos). If it was not primarily a public display, then the visiting public should be asked to support their work by donation, rather than by entrance fee. I think its hypocritical to decry zoos generally when this establishment operates along the same lines as any other zoo/animal collection and is a member of a 'zoo' organisation.
Yeah, it was a zoo, he just wanted to push the point that he was mopping up the nastier end of captivity in rescuing many abused primates, fair enough. And I agree with someone running a rescue centre making that distinction. However, they didn't need to house siamang or lemurs or woolly monkeys, they do because they want to participate in captive breeding programmes, although I'll be mightily surprised if a single woolly monkey or siamang from an EEP ever gets released into the wild. The cornish woolly monkey sanctuary tried it a few years ago, and came up against so many problems not least that most of the european woolly monkey population are not pure subspecific individuals. So monkey world does have an element of 'zoo' to it that perhaps other primate rescue centres do not. But if, like Orang09, you just love orangs, its gonna be up there.......
