Asian elephants returning to their enclosure (1)

3 cows and 3 young. They are walking back from a visit to an unused area of the zoo, where they can feed and amuse themselves. The blue and silver car, with the registration number obscured, is mine. Road between Indian rhinos and onagers, Whipsnade, February 2009.

I wonder if Karishma from Twycross is in this group? I suspect not as she is still a bit smaller than the others.

Who do you think you are, the Prime Minister?;)

did you get any shots of the Indian rhinos using the indoor pools?

There was a cow and two half-grown calves in the sand paddock. I thought she would be the one who doesn't get on with the others. I didn't see the bull, he must have been inside. I presume that this group were heading to the house where the white rhinos used to be kept, where their food was ready for them.
There were no Indian rhinos inside the new house. I got a few photos of the bull in the biggest paddock.
I reserve the right to conceal my car reg - one of our members might be a traffic cop who dislikes photos of gorillas  Anyway the PM doesn't drive.

I also saw three females plus their calves in the grounds, while the fourth adult + Karishma stayed behind in the paddock. I have a feeling maybe these two don't go out for walks but I'm not too sure on that. Maybe one of the 'halfgrowns' you saw was in fact Karishma- she has a round back and a rather short body.

Those two don't walk. I got told it's because the older one was the female who killed the keeper in London so they can't take a chance with her, and they haven't handled Karishma that much so they don't know if she can be trusted.

      That's a great photo!

      Thanks for that information.

Thank you. I am rather proud of the fact that I didn't shake the camera as those elephants approached my car. Those ZSL elephant keepers do a very good job . . . and the elephants are stars too, of course.

I hope you had someone else driving in this pic, otherwise that would be an even larger hold up. :)

that would be cool as to just have your car amongst elephants.. in that situation of course! any other you car might become crushed!
      Lucky gentle lemur. :)
