Is that the 'Forest' Elephant bull Jumbo? You can't see the ears but the downward-pointing tusks look right.
    • Chalklion
The ears do look right for an african elephant, and I believe they have only ever had one male as you have suggested. They did have two female forest elephants one of which may be the other elephant (Katie?) in the picture. The other (MSamva?) died 1981, I think before this photo was taken. Its definately African. The ears of a Forest elephant(cyclotis) are distinctive(rounded) but don't show here.

      The tusks definitely are...

I am sure this photograph is of the forest elephant bull 'Jumbo'.

The other African elephants at Whipsnade around this time were NOT forest elephants.

Sorry, the females are listed as bush elephants on the website, my mistake.

where was the african elephant enclosure?
    • Tim May
There wasn’t an enclosure specifically for African elephants, they were kept in the old elephant enclosure (which also housed Asian elephants).

This was opposite the entrance, where the lemur enclosure now is; the old Elephant House is still standing as it is a listed building.

Do ZSL have any plans to make use of this house?

thankyou very much:), when did they open the new elephant enclosure then?, and why did they pick asian elephants rather than africans?
