Yup, they were only known from fossil records, but were rediscovered in the 70's.

I love the pic! Thank you for posting it! I haven't seen the babies yet... but I will be at the zoo on Friday probably, so I will then hopefully. Also, thank you for posting that list of outgoing/incoming animal residents. I'm glad to see that some of our Cotton-Top Tamarins are moving to Miami (presumably for their huge new Amazon and Beyond section, which is opening in December.) I will be visiting them of course, because Miami is my second home and I love Miami Metro Zoo!

Thanks! Hopefully they don't have the barrier when you. All the pics were taken from far, as there is a barrier to make sure is quiet for the peccary family.

When you go to Miami make sure you take a lot of pics of the animals and exhibits...please! I'm very curious how it will look.

Also the Prehensile-tailed Porcupines might be for the new "Amazon and Beyond".

Yes, when I saw it in the list I was so happy for Chico cause he was finally leaving, but I recently saw an updated list and it doesn't mention him leaving anymore. I hope it does happen mainly for him so he won't leave alone anymore. I also heard we might be getting a new mob (family) of meerkats once Chico leaves.

I was at the zoo today and found out a couple of new things that will be happening at the zoo.

One thing that I found out today is that we are going to receive the male Hippopotamus from San Diego Zoo, but we are also sending our male to San Diego, so we are trading hippos.

I also found out that the zoo is testing the new "Golden Monkeys of China" exhibit to see if the exhibit is safe for the monkeys. The funny thing is that the zoo is also testing to see if the animals could escape with a male Red-crowned Mangabey. So if someone goes to the zoo they'll see a Mangabey inside the new exhibit, but this won't last for long since he is moving to another collection really soon.

I saw the piglets! There were barely any visitors at the zoo, due to the heat I'm assuming (it got up to 104 degrees F!) and it was very nice and quiet. The piglets were chasing each other, then they flopped down together for a rest. They're so cute! I'll upload the pics I took, but they aren't the best... I zoomed in as far as I could but they were a fair distance from where I was.

Calamian deer
Old 04-10-2008

Could any of you LA regulars tell me if (and where) the Calamian deer are on exhibit?

Thanks!

The Calamian deer are indeed on exhibit, and they are by the play park in the Eurasia section of the zoo. They are in the old Visayan Warty Pig exhibit at the top of the zoo, next to the enrichment garden. I've only seen three (1.2), but in ISIS it mentions 1.3, I knew we were supposed to get another female from SD but I don't know if she arrived already or that's another ISIS mistake.

Thanks mstickmanp!
Your answer raises the question "where are the pigs now?"
(To bad they no longer have the full listing of animals on the guide map)

The pigs are in the next exhibit to the left of the calamian deers. The zoo used to have two exhibits for the pigs, even though they were kind of far from each other.
