Hi, I have heard that this zoo had exhibited black-and-rufous giant elephant-shrews, one of my most-want-to-see species. But when I finally had a chance to come to USA this week and went to the zoo last Friday, I found there was no enclosure for giant elephant-shrew in small mammal house, and only two enclosures for short-eared elephant-shrews. Then where is the giant elephant-shrew? Are they still exhibit this species? Thank you! By the way, do the spectacle bears and red river hogs on exhibit now? I had found their enclosure last Friday, but they didn't show.
The spectacle bears are off exhibit right now because the female has two small cubs shes caring for. They are not yet on exhibit. And their father died before they were born so they dont have a second adult to put on exhibit while the cubs are young.
"All of Billie Jean’s cubs share the same father, Nikki, who was humanely euthanized in August of 2012 after a year-long battle with squamous cell carcinoma (cancer). Natural breeding between Nikki and Billie Jean took place in April." This came from Andean Bear Cam - National Zoo| FONZ. Doesn't say how old he was.
I believe the Red River Hogs are on exhibit. I don't know if Smithsonian's National Zoo still holds Black and Rufous Elephant Shrews, but I know Peabody Museum here in Connecticut does.
please confirm Hi guys! I am planning to visit Peabody Museum this weekend. The only reason I am going is to see the elephant shrew. Would be extremely grateful if you could confirm that the animals are still there (otherwise I won't be going). Sorry to bother you, but I really haven't found any up-to-date materials on whether the museum still has them. Thank you in advance!!! can't wait to see the shrews))))
This is actually incorrect. Chaska, one of the cubs from a few years ago, is still on exhibit. However, she's good at hiding in her exhibit. I have found her hiding in the way back or in the two openings in the center of the exhibit (stairs leading to their holding area). The red river hog, Roscoe, is on exhibit in the Cheetah Conservation Station. He shares an exhibit with sitatunga so they may have been exhibit or perhaps they were given access to their indoor holding area and were in there.
I have visited the museum thrice since I arrived at New Haven, but I am sure there are no shrews there~~ however the fossil collection is great, especially the ground sloth with fur and soft tissue attached on its fossil.
It would be a long trip but I did just see black and rufous elephant shrews (Rhynchyon petersi - giant not listed in the species name) at the Peoria, IL zoo a few weeks ago. One was found in a large exhibit in the small animal building near the Africa Section of the zoo. I even talked to a friendly education employee and she said the zoo had a history of exhibiting them.
