A new article at ShowMe Elephants regarding a partial elephant history of the Portland Zoo, including elephants later relocated to Busch Gardens Tampa and Busch Gardens Houston. There is also question of the San Jose Zoo's elephant history. If anyone has further information regarding the locations and animals questioned in the report, please leave a comment or message me in an effort to complete their records for elephant historians.

There used to be a Busch Gardens in Houston??? I used to live near the (now closed) one in Van Nuys, California, which had a somewhat limited animal collection (mostly birds), but I never knew they had one in Houston.

According to Wikipedia there was one there, but it was only open for two years (1971-3) so it must have been a bit of a financial disaster.

This place looks great! I can't believe it closed so quickly. An all asian themed park (when everyone else did and still does african). The tiger exhibit looks far ahead of its time. And the only non-asian section was an indoor climate controlled dome for penguins and polar bears? They were years ahead of everyone!

Here is a fifteen image slide show with more cool black and white pics:

Thank you very much for the link! This is the first picture I have seen of an elephant from the Busch Gardens Houston. Can anyone identify the location of the elephant enclosure from the aerial photographs?
