Giant Anteaters breeding in US zoos?
Old 09-04-2008

Does SF Zoo still exhibit Giant Anteaters in their South America exhibit?

What is the status of this species in America? Any successful births?

I saw a constantly pacing giant anteater at the San Francisco Zoo two years ago, and so I'm assuming that they still keep the species. However, births of anteaters aren't overly common, although there have been a few in recent years.

Would i be right in saying the leading zoos in the US for breeding giant anteater are Santa Barbara, Nashville and Jacksonville?

San Diego has bred one, and I believe it is around 5 months old...

Several zoos have bred them in the past few years. Nashville Zoo imported a whole lot from South American in 2000/2002/2004 and they have a breeding complex of about 12 anteaters. In recent years Wichita, Denver, Palm Beach, Fresno, Nashville, Santa Barbara, and Saint Louis had bred successfully giant anteaters....im sure there are others too.

San Francisco Zoo still has them as of January 1, 2007 (according to my records).

Reid Park in Tucson AZ has a really great record for breeding giant anteaters. The Phoenix Zoo has also had several births from their pair.

Sedgwick County Zoo has a pair that had a baby the first year they met. They seems to be a happy couple for years to come.
