I am heading to San Antonio in December to visit my family but i also want to visit this zoo. I read that the zoo is building a new giraffe exhibit. Does anyone know if they have started construction yet? My brother said they havent started yet but that was in January. I don't know much about this zoo and the website is outdated as my brother says.So if anyone knows if they have started or when it's finished reply on this thread.

    I went in early March

No construction had started yet even though the savannah area had been greyed out as being renovated at that time on the map. The existing exhibit with ostrich, zebra, and antelope was still open. When it happens, it should probably be a fast change over. I wouldn't expect anything later than June.

They broke ground today and the opening day is in november. They have signs that say Giraffe Feeding Adventure near the exhibit. The zebras have moved into the yard that the rhino usually occupied and the lone white rhino is in a rather muddy exhibit that has been empty for awhile but was the former black rhino exhibit.

My question is, what species of antelope. Will we get to see their Hartebeest?

Is the rhino male Kutu still destined to leave for pastures new and hopefully become a breeder?

Anything in the Masterplan for rhinos at San Antonio (being a historical tradition … for both African species)?

Again, I think the zoo is really quite nice and often under appreciated. The Africa III / Giraffe Heights will be a great addition.

I agree I have been to the zoo a couple times and it is very under appreciated and gets a lot of hate for the elephant exhibit, which I agree is not great, but it is not like they can just get rid of Lucky as she has been solitary for most of her life, and they obviously don't have enough money to build a new one. Please don't hate on me, I am just bringing up a point.

Yeah, I don't know how SAZ keeps ending up on "worst zoos in the world" lists. The elephant thing is really the only questionable aspect of the zoo, and even then, that's a complicated issue. The zoo has mentioned that they plan on getting 3 African elephants when she dies. I do think that the zoo legitimately believes that keeping Lucky there is what's best for her. Otherwise they could just send her off to another place and they can work on a new, more profitable elephant exhibit. And even if you disagree with SAZ on this, I don't think it warrants putting the zoo on a list with places where animals legit die of starvation.
