No surprise here. This zoo has been going downhill for years under the current management.

Jackson Zoo looks set to lose its AZA-accredited status and the reason will be because of financial woes. The same thing happened to Zoo Montana a couple of years ago, and Jackson has seen attendance plummet and financial stress emerge.

I just saw this article and looked a photos of the zoo in the gallery. For animals to be relocated I hope the orangs, other apes, and monkeys get another home!

Jackson Zoo, which I reviewed as part of my 2012 road trip of 50 zoos in 50 days, has had its AZA-accreditation officially yanked due to financial issues.

I lived in a suburb of Jackson from 1969-1989 and again from 1993-1998 and have been back many times since because I had family there until a year ago. I watched the area around the zoo thrive then decline then die. The roads around the zoo are in very bad condition, and the area is plagued with poverty, gangs, and crime.

For the sake of the city, I hope the zoo stays where it is and becomes the cornerstone of rejuvenation, but that is very unlikely. For the sake of the zoo, I hope it moves. LeFleur's Bluff (mentioned in the article) is probably the best location within the city limits, and that park already has a nice science museum.

If the zoo location was not limited to the city (which is almost unthinkable since it is primarily funded by the city), there is plenty of land just outside of town that would be ideal. Perhaps the city could annex some new land and build a whole cultural complex with the zoo as the centerpiece. But of course, that takes money that the city does not have right now.

Eight red wolf pups were born to parents Taladu and Kanati. There are 3 boys and 5 girls. The pups wont be on exhibit for several more weeks as they grow but are doing well. Older brothers Wowati, Uyosi and Asdaya are currently off exhibit.
