Golden Silk Orb Weaver Spiders are now on display in LAIR and can be seen in the Fly River Turtle Aquarium and the Cottonmouth/Copperhead exhibit.

The Fiji Island Iguanas are now in the former Knight Anole exhibit.

 

Any news on the komodo dragons being exported to Australia?

 

None in this particular update taken from the zoo's monthly newsletter.

 

It will be nice to see lesser kudu at the zoo. They seem to be adding some antelope species with the addition of kudu and steenbok.

I need to get back over to the zoo to see them and the new additions to the LAIR.

I really wish they would figure out how to find a home for the Sumatran rhino where people could see him.

It's great to see that the zoo is adding more antelopes, and I'm hoping more species will be added in the near future. Does anybody know if the Lesser Kudu will be in the former Giant Eland exhibit or with the Steenbok?

Also, what's in the former Fiji Island Iguana exhibit? I know they had problems since the exhibit opened with the climate controlled exhibit.

I also need to get back to the zoo to see all these new additions. I haven't been to the zoo since March!!!

 

I didn't know L.A. Zoo exhibited pudu. Are they a recent addition?

 

Two things, pudu have been exhibited for a number of years. They are currently in with the black howlers.Right now the lesser kudu are in the exhibit next to the old giant eland exhibit.

 

That would be where the Steenbok are, right? or in the Ostrich exhibit?

I need to get back to the zoo soon...

 

I would imagine they are currently in the Steenbok yard, with the recent remodeling of their barn. Possibly sharing the yard with them while preparations are made for them or something else in the former Eland yard. But that's just a guess.

 

Ok, that is what I was thinking.

 

Steenbok and lesser kudu would make a very interesting mix. At Denver we have our lesser's with a group of lapped-faced vultures. Do you think the steenbok will be to nervous around the larger kudu?

When we Zoochatters toured the zoo on September 23 the steenbok were seen only in a side yard, not yet mixing in with the kudu. It wasn't clear if they yet had access to the big yard where the kudu are.

 

I was doing a little research on mountain tapirs and realized that a male born in Los Angeles in 1983, died in March of 2012. His 29 years gives him the longevity of this species in captivity. The female that was in Stuttgart was approximately 27 years old when she died. It would appear that all of the worlds mountain tapirs currently in zoos were born in Los Angeles. This does not include 2 you animals that were orphaned in Colombia and are being rehabiltated for release at some point in the future.
