I thought I'd make a news thread for the LEO Zoological Conservation Center since there's currently none out there.

One of the zoo's female Baringo Giraffes, Petal, gave birth to a healthy female calf on Friday, March 22:

On February 7 the zoo also had a male Eastern Bongo born to 5 year-old, two time mother Amelia Ear-Hart:

EDIT: The zoo says they still have two pregnant giraffes. I'm pretty sure they are both Baringos but they may also be some of the hybrid Reticulated Giraffes that are there. Also, this giraffe birth may be a first for Connecticut!:)

The newborn giraffe has been named "Sandy Hope" to honor the victims of them Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. The zoo says the name was suggested by 66 separate applicants.

Well obviously there has been a Brazilian Tapir birth. The baby's name is Squeak and it's a girl!

Well I just got a Fall newsletter from the center and it seems like there are a few new births and arrivals! First off, it seems the center has had a second giraffe birth because it shows the picture of a young giraffe and it says her name is Penelope, which is not the name of the first calf. I don't know if she's one of the Baringo Giraffe or a hybrid. They've also had a Red Kangaroo joey born, named Daisy. An unnamed White-Faced Saki and Lar Gibbon have been born also. The new arrivals, along with the two new Cheetahs, are a female Black Howler Monkey, a three-banded armadillo (not sure on the species), five African Penguins (from the pic it seems at least one is a chick), a Fennec Fox, Toco Toucan, and a White-Faced Saki.

Can this be moved into its own forum please?

Mona Lisa, the Zoos King Cheetah recently gave birth to eight cubs. Five are with Mum and three are being hand-reared, as Mum was overwhelmed.

One of the better collection of animals in the New England area, unfortunately they are not open to the public. They offer "basic safari" tours one day a week on Thursdays from May to October, but it cost $500 per person. I would love to see a King Cheetah, but that's way too expensive for me. But apparently they do good work there, so the money is supporting something worthwhile.

The center has had several births in the past few months:
-African Crested Porcupine born September 3.
-Mantled Guerezas born September 16 and November 4.
    -Aardvark born September 18.
-Common Squirrel Monkey born September 29.

Does anyone have any idea what subspecies of colobus they have? I recall them being different from kikuyuensis but they don't list it on the website anymore.

Thylo, have you been here? I just came across it and the cheetahs and hyenas in particular have me very, very interested. For the price, is it worth a visit?
