I think whoever came up with that idea may have been licking some of the amphibian livestock at the time...

To quote the website, "this vibrant theatrical environment will immerse guests in a day in the life on an African river."
Apparently an African river looks like a 1970's nightclub.

This really weird. I dont even know how to describe it... Ya nothing comes to mind. Will the hippos be in the dark all the time? Inside all the time? Im guessing thats a lot of neon paint so should they live in a black lit area? Its beyond bizarre.

Although Tealovingdave your comment is spectacular! Love it. Best thing I've read on zoo chat in months. Licking amphibians... So funny and possibly true. What other possible answer is there for some one thinking this up? Perhaps a break from sanity or a lot of drugs but I think we should go with the amphibians.

Stop... Stop... you guys are killing me. Disco-potamus... where do you find this stuff? Now that Ive seen that photo and the exhibit inspired by a amphibian licking designer, my life is complete. I can die still laughing hysterically 50 years from now.

That enclosure looks horrible! Super small and then there's the whole LSD thing! I *would* like to see a nicely done nocturnal hippo exhibit, though.

That's phase 2 of the exhibit make over. Finding XXXXXXXXXXXXXXL disco outfits is harder than you would think.

They would likely end up raiding the wardrobe of Elton John, Meaf Loaf and Elvis and cobbling what they found together :p

I just realized the exhibit is missing the most important thing for a disco-potamus's surivial... wheres the disco ball on the ceiling? Sure there are the neon tie dye table tops floating through the air but where is the all important disco ball? Clearly this exhibit is sub par for the disco-potamus.

Looks like Willy Wonka was the designer. I don't like the look of it! Hippo-dee-doo-doo.

The most shocking thing of all is that it is not in Portland or San Francisco

In all seriousness, I doubt they're building a new exhibit; they're likely just making you feel tripped out with their "renovations" to this exhibit:

BTW, TeaLovingDave, the disco-potamus gave me a good chuckle.:D

yes the artist's impression in the links in this thread are just the existing hippo enclosure with the addition of sci-fi trees and epilepsy-inducing wall designs.

    Wow, man, the colours.

Actually I think the zoo's obviously very forward thinking -with states starting to legalise cannabis the zoos looking to be first in line to for the previously untapped market of people who want to get stoned and visit a zoo. If there's a (munchie) snack kiosk in close proximity to the exhibit I think that's point proven.

That's just embarrassing. If that idea popped into my head, I'd be too ashamed to tell anyone else about it.

I'm sure there must be certain legal mushrooms available in the States, that exhibit is far too trippy for a casual smoker! ;)

And this is my nomination for "Best Thread Title Ever!" :D :p

I bet the concept of light shows and animal exhibits takes off!

Seriously this will be incredibly entertaining to the average zoo visitor.

I have recently seen Euro Disney light show and for New Year's Eve my home city had some very impressive light shows projected on to buildings, both were very good! As this technology becomes more affordable and adaptive l can easily imagine very commercial zoo integrating this, practically to drive night time attendance.

Personally I hope not! I'd hate to see this become a new "norm" in American zoos! I wonder how the hippos will react to this? And the birds!
