I was thinking there could be a general thread on what goes on at Mote. They always seem to have the most interesting things going on there. Because the Aquarium and the other parts of the lab such as the Dolphin Hospital seem to be intertwined (not that that's necessarily a bad time given their research and education focus) this could be a place to report any old thing that happens that is significant. Sadly, one of Sarasota Bay's oldest Dolphins seems to have died after a nasty encounter with fishing gear. Mote is currently caring for a boat struck Loggerhead Turtle. She had a piece of debris sticking out of her shell but it fell out before she made it to the Turtle hospital. She is doing well. Red tide bloom heading south from Hernando Researchers from Mote are heading out Thursday to study a red tide bloom that has formed off the coast of Florida. They want to know what is going on beneath the surface.
Dolphin caught in lake near Everglades City rescued Mote recently participated in the rescue/release of a dolphin that was caught in a lake. The whole operation seems to have been very hairy, the lake was very shallow and there was a gator in the pen that they used to catch the dolphin. It was determined to be only out of habitat and was released later that day after being fitted with a satellite tag.

In February, Moonshine, the male Pantropical Spotted Dolphin, died. Mote no longer has any dolphins on exhibit right now. What appears to be a Bottlenose Dolphin has been rescued after being found on its side on a sand bar on the east side of Tampa Bay. It has vocalized and shown some interest in fish, however its condition remains critical. He has been nicknamed "Feeny" and weighs 285 pounds. He is an adult male.
