I was thinking there could be a general thread on what goes on at Mote. They always seem to have the most interesting things going on there. Because the Aquarium and the other parts of the lab such as the Dolphin Hospital seem to be intertwined (not that that's necessarily a bad time given their research and education focus) this could be a place to report any old thing that happens that is significant.

Sadly, one of Sarasota Bay's oldest Dolphins seems to have died after a nasty encounter with fishing gear. Sadly fishing gear deaths seem to run in the family:

Also, one of their oldest and most devoted volunteers died:

There is also some kind of hubbub about a waterfront proposal:

Good news last. Their animal rescue program has a new boat:):

Mote is currently caring for a boat struck Loggerhead Turtle. She had a piece of debris sticking out of her shell but it fell out before she made it to the Turtle hospital. She is doing well.

Huh, I never noticed that. I would have expected a thread on this place to be under the Mote subheading and I never saw it.

Yeah, I forgot to place it under the Mote subforum. This thread could be the news thread since this is under the actual Mote forum.

Red tide bloom heading south from Hernando

Researchers from Mote are heading out Thursday to study a red tide bloom that has formed off the coast of Florida. They want to know what is going on beneath the surface.

Dolphin caught in lake near Everglades City rescued

Mote recently participated in the rescue/release of a dolphin that was caught in a lake. The whole operation seems to have been very hairy, the lake was very shallow and there was a gator in the pen that they used to catch the dolphin. It was determined to be only out of habitat and was released later that day after being fitted with a satellite tag.

Mote is selling its caviar business to a group that wants to move the Aquarium downtown.

What is so wonderful about caviar anyway?

Also two Loggerhead Turtles were released, in conjunction with the Sarasota Police.

Lived up to the hype: they're building a new aquarium on mainland Sarasota County.

Oceans For All | Science Education Aquarium | Mote Marine

Looks like it will be pretty cool, and they promise a lot of focus on education, science, and research.
