I think some of the exhibits were sealed off by wooden fences, but most are still on exhibit. I think its just the old concrete goat enclosures.

As of mid June the only ones that were sealed off were the old goat enclosures.

Do you know if those species are located in another part of the zoo? If I am looking for more of the unusual "lifers" animals, than would the Safari Park be a better choice?

What do you want to see? The giant pandas, pangolin, koalas, kagus, birds of paradise, all of the reptiles, etc. will be on display at the zoo. The building of Africa Rocks should not significantly impact your visit to the zoo at all.

I would highly recommend going to both the zoo and the Safari Park if you can. They are very different experiences that complement each other.

If you can only chose one then it will depend on what kinds of animals that you want to see. If you want to see ungulates (including northern white rhino) , elephants, lions, tigers, okapis, African water fowl, etc. then the Safari Park is where it's at. If you want to see marsupials, bears, birds, reptiles, pangolins, invertebrates, hippos, primates, and carnivores then the zoo is probably what you want.

Thank you for all the help! I don't think the construction will damage my list too much but I was hoping to see the desert warthog (don't know if those are close to the goats) and the goral.

The warthog is no longer there, with Chacoan Peccaries being exhibited in that exhibit now. The goral are also not there as they were exhibited in one of the closed off "goat grottoes."

Not to add further confusion, but are there warthogs on display via one of the escalators?

The warthogs are in the exhibit next to the moving walkway that goes up to Elephant Odyssey. The female recently gave birth to two babies. I don't know if they are Desert Warthogs. It is not easy to find them in this exhibit but I have seen photos of the babies.

I still didn't see the warthogs but I took a picture of the sign.

This is semi-off topic but what was in that exhibit before? I could've sworn it used to be singing dogs.

I know at some point the exhibit was home to African wild dogs.

It also has had hyenas and for a short time the male gerenuks were in there.

No. To my knowledge San Diego has not had Desert Warthogs any time in the recent past. There was an old ISIS "ghost" of one from the SDWAP, but I'm assuming it dated back before the split and aethiopicus was the species name for all warthogs.

Since I wasn't lucky enough to have been to S.D. before the "Goat Grottos" were boarded up, what species used to be in the exhibits that are now closed?

Lots of things. Depends on the time frame you are looking for. I think most recently it was Central Chinese Goral and Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby, but I've seen Kamchatkan Snow Sheep, Dall's Sheep, Cretan Wild Goat, and Spanish Ibex in them over the years.

Last year there were also Spotted Hyenas on the third set of grottoes closest to the Striped Hyena exhibit (now Giant Anteater). The spotted hyenas were moved to the old lion grotto in Center Street (Asian Passage).
