The Sacramento Zoo is renovating its outdated small mammal exhibits into a new African small mammal (and bird) exhibit featuring aardvarks, fruit bats, banded mongoose, Wolf's guenons, crested guinea fowl, and red-billed hornbills.

Having been rather disappointed with this zoo on my 2011 road trip I must admit that I'm excited by this nice overhaul of what is arguably the worst part of the entire zoo. Bravo!

Yes, it is long overdue. Hopefully they can keep the progress rolling and build new monkey and gibbon exhibits to replace the old ones also. Things are looking up at the Sacramento Zoo with new river otter, sifaka, and giraffe exhibits. As with most zoos there is still much to do, but it is important to acknowledge progress and they have certainly made some.

No black footed cats? No sand cats? No any kind of cats? What kind of lame small mammal house is this?

The Sacramento Zoo did actually have an excellent small cat collection in the past (Pallas cats, black-footed cats, servals, caracal, Geoffery's cats, margays, jungle cats, Canadian lynx), but did not have good housing for them so did the right thing and found better homes for the species that remained.

They still have margays, and a serval and bobcat are present as education animals.

They have margays - are you sure? I thought all the margays in the United States had died out?

I think that they have a margay - the zoo website lists it as one of their current animals and it is on their map. I'm pretty sure that it was still at the zoo when I visited last month. I think it is quite an old individual so it may not be there for much longer.

Rare Wolf's Guenon Born at Sacramento Zoo

On January 26th, Sacramento Zoo's female Wolf's Guenon gave birth to her first infant. Currently, there are fewer than 35 of these monkeys, housed at 11 AZA institutions in the United States. Mother Mimi and father Eddie have been very protective of the baby, making it difficult for keepers to determine the weight or even its sex.

“Little is known about Wolf’s Guenons because of their small population in zoos. In the wild, the dense forests in which they live make them hard to spot,” said Harrison Edell, Sacramento Zoo General Curator. “This birth is significant to the Sacramento Zoo; with every birth, we learn more about this species’ biology, contributing to our overall knowledge about this species.”

Wolf’s Guenons are native to central Africa where they inhabit forests and forage for fruits, seeds, and an occasional insect. Forming loose family groups in the wild, these monkeys are even known to spend time with other primate species including Bonobos, colobus monkeys and other guenons. A larger mixed-species group may mean that there are more eyes on the lookout for predators, and many guenons have learned to recognize other monkeys’ alarm calls so that they know how to respond correctly if a neighbor spots a leopard or eagle.
