Just thought without a major thread for this zoo I'd post some news A male Malayan tiger on-loan from San Diego Zoo was killed by his 'intended' mate. Last week the zoo received a male malayan tiger for breeding purposes. He will be paired with one of the two females currently in residence. The male arrived from Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and is currently off exhibit in quarantine. The city of El Paso is voting in November on a "Quality of Life" bond that would see $500 million in city-wide improvements, including about $50 million to the local zoo. If the bond gets a "yes" vote then the zoo would spend approximately $25 million on a Chihuahuan Desert complex that would house Mexican wolves, jaguars, cougars, badgers and other creatures. The link below has a breakdown of what the remaining money would be spent on, and to no surprise the plans include penguins. A look at what Quality of Life bond would bring to El Paso Zoo | News - Home
This is fantastic! (If it passes of course). However, I find it odd with all that money that they make no mention of improving the elephant exhibit.
El Paso is a city on the rise, as the $470 million Quality of Bond was given approval for many improvements to the cultural institutions of the city. The zoo will now have $50 million to spend on a variety of exhibits (see earlier postings in this thread for details) and an already very good little zoo will soon become even better. A quote from the above article seems out of place and very expensive. "Six million dollars would pay for the acquisition of more animals to the Asia exhibit, such as red pandas, Komodo dragons and small clawed otters"

I printed the 53-page document and I've studied it thoroughly as I enjoy perusing Master Plans and I was very impressed with the zoo when I visited in 2010. With $50 million in funding guaranteed via a city-wide bond the future is bright for this small yet excellent establishment, and half of the bond money will go towards a Chihuahuan Desert complex that will replace part of the Americas zone. Marquee mammals such as Jaguar, Mountain Lion, Ocelot, Mexican Gray Wolf, Peccary, Peninsular Pronghorn and Coati will be included in this area that has 2018 as an estimated opening date. African Wild Dogs and Red River Hogs will be added to an already very new African zone, and penguins are an attraction that are slated to be added by 2021.
