According to 'Gorillas Galore' database website there are gorillas called Mara and Shanta which you have not mentioned.

Thank you for your trip report groundskeeper21. It sounds like you had a nice trip :) I was thinking about heading to the zoo this weekend, but alas I'm too busy. I have to agree with your assessment of Night Hunters. Some of it is quite nice, while some of it is still disappointing, the number one example being the caracal exhibit. I do, however, believe that the cougar exhibit turned out quite nicely. Hopefully the tiger and snow leopard exhibits will turn out just as nice as the plans suggest.

I'm am looking forward to seeing the species line-up for the African Savannah. I agree that cape buffalo would be wonderful to see, but unfortunately they are extremely unlikely candidates. I could see them being more likely of a choice for Columbus' African Savannah than for Cincinnati's, though still it's rather unlikely.

I wholeheartedly agree with you that the zoo is slowly-but-surely getting on the right track and taking a turn for the better. The zoo's future is certainly a bright one.

I have always liked the Cincinnati Zoo, perhaps because of the cat collection, but I have noticed I seem to be in the minority on this on ZooChat.

Today is the sixth birthday of one of the zoo's Indian Rhinoceroses, Manjula. She's a fine specimen, quite possibly the most beautiful Indian Rhinoceros that I've ever seen.

When will Cincin finally source a bull rhino to breed naturally? ;)

The zoo will be receiving two female gorillas, one, Asha, from the Gladys Porter Zoo, and another, Anju, from the Pittsburgh Zoo, next year as potential mates for their silverback, Jomo. To make room for these new additions, several of the zoo's gorillas will be moving to other zoos across the country. Two females, Madge and Shanta, will be moving to the Dallas Zoo as non-breeding companions for Dallas' male, Patrick. A mother and son, Muke and Bakari, will be moving to the Oklahoma City Zoo. This transfer is being made to integrate young Bakari into a social unit with other gorillas that are close to his own age.

In other news, the zoo has received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to reinterpret the award-winning Jungle Trails exhibit to be more engaging for families.

I have been reading this thread for a long time and I have been keeping track of what's closed or not. So I have a couple of questions, 1. is the path to the otter and turtle exhibit in Wolf Woods still closed? Did you get to see how Cat Canyon is looking also? And is there a species in empty Wildlife Canyon exhibit (the first one by the steps). Lastly, is there any different changes in the animals collection, or if any animal is in an exhibit that is usually not in there, such as species in Jungle Trails that always change?

In other news, the zoo will receive a male red panda from the Houston zoo to breed with the females. Just exactly what the zoo should have.:)

First off I would like to welcome you to ZooChat! :)

Now, as far as the updates to Jungle Trails go, basically they will be adding new innovative and interactive features to engage families in learning about our primate relatives. I would imagine some of the features will be very similar those experimented with in the Night Hunters rotunda, but of course they won't be exactly the same.

Thank you for the news about the pandas! This is very exciting news to hear.

In addition to that news, the zoo is now offering private elephant encounters with the purchase of an elephant painting. With both my birthday and Christmas fast approaching, I may have to look into it as a present for myself.

    Thanks for the welcome!:)

For a heads up, if you have an iphone, android or itouch, then you can look at the zoo's twitter feeds to find out more updates about the zoo even before the zoo's Facebook page or even the website tells us.

I must remember to check Twitter more often. I wasn't all that interesting in Twitter, but it it's truly a quick and efficient way to receive news.

You can edit your posts if you have more information to add to what you've already said, so you are not double posting. There's a button in the bottom right hand corner that allows you to do so.

The zoo will most likely have one next year with the arrival of a female named Asha on October 13th. Then Anju will come in the spring. Both females are for Jomo the leader of the group.
