First Lincoln Park, then Brookfield and now Niabi...the state of Illinois has many zoos and all of them are bereft of elephants. The vote was 21-0 yesterday to send the two aging females away from Niabi Zoo: Elephants to leave Niabi Zoo
The zoo is considering whether to use the elephants' space for rhinos. Also, the elephants should be relocated before winter.
Niabi Zoo has narrowed down its search for a new elephant home for its two aging pachyderms to 3 finalists (let the speculation run rampant) while the next couple of big projects are: AZA-re-accreditation and a lion exhibit. The link below is very informative: Niabi Zoo: Elephants going, lions next big thing
Several new additions: a snow leopard, a red wolf, a baby colobus monkey, and snake feeding demonstrations. The Zoo is also still thinking about what to do with the now empty elephant exhibit; rhinos are a possible replacement. Niabi Zoo gets new animals | WQAD.com
To put the record straight on the elephants in the September 2013 posting. The elderly females Babe and Sophie were shipped out to Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas in October 2013. It will be interesting how the elephant exhibit might be remodeled for rhinos.

Great photos! The newer exhibits look fantastic compared to the older stuff. Do they have penguins? There's no pictures, it's no t on the Wiki or the map, but there's a news article from 2010 mentioning them.
Thank you! Perhaps they were sent to another zoo before they lost accreditation. I can't imagine they're being kept off-exhibit.
