There are 34.43 in the SSP population (including Japan). Without Japan, there are 69 in the US.

Okapi management site
This website is great. I love browsing the studbook, I wish that all the species could be on the web like this.

New Okapi Birth
Old 24-08-2008

I had an Okapi born August 22nd during Tropical Storm Fay. Many pregnant animals (and humans) give birth in these tropical storms/hurricanes due to the drop in barometric pressure. The calf is nursing and getting much attention from its first time mother.

That's great, glad mom and baby are doing well. So how many are under your care now?

Yes, Brookfield has a mother-daughter pair, Semliki and Sauda. Semliki is currently pregnant by Ulimi their most recent breeding bull. This will be her 2nd calf.

Cincinnati Zoo had an okapi calf born today to Lisala and Sungura. Sungura died last spring. And Lisala is one of two surviving offspring of a wild caught female, Asengu. Sex is unknown at this time.
