This is awesome news! Currently there are 7 elephants in a 1.5 acre exhibit (not 3 acres as written in the first article) and increasing that to 6 acres should make the Oregon Zoo one of the best places in North America to see Asian elephants. Also, having over 200 off-exhibit acres for the males will be fabulous. I've visited the zoo on 3 occasions and have often complained about what I perceive to be a terrible enclosure, and so these changes are very welcome indeed. Often the elephants are segregated into different areas of the paddock, and so in reality they have very tiny areas for themselves. There is always one male indoors with barely enough space to walk twenty paces.;)

    Remote Elephant Center

"Two locations have been identified as possible sites for the Oregon Zoo’s Remote Elephant Center (REC), both in Clackamas County. The overall goal of the Center is to establish what zoo officials call a “multigenerational, matriarchal breeding herd of Asian elephants that will be sustained for generations.” It could house four bulls and 12 females, but females could be transported between the two herds — at the zoo or the center — depending on how the shift might support the zoo’s goals."

I missed this thread and had no idea the Oregon Zoo was planning a massive off-exhibit elephant breeding site (similar, I assume, to what Pittsburgh Zoo did). Just found out about it from this news link that flashed on the right side of the ZooChat main page.

From the Oregon Zoo's Official Facebook page:

"Our videographer put together a BEAUTIFUL video of our elephant herd interacting — watch and let us know what you think. Also, remember that Oregon Public Broadcasting wants to know if you’re a fan of Oregon Zoo elephants. Go to their website to comment: http://bit.ly/OPB_elephants"

    Elephant calf 'Droopy' and Family

A new article at ShowMe Elephants regarding a partial elephant history of the Portland Zoo, including elephants later relocated to Busch Gardens Tampa and Busch Gardens Houston. There is also question of the San Jose Zoo's elephant history. If anyone has further information regarding the locations and animals questioned in the report, please leave a comment or message me in an effort to complete their records for elephant historians.

On the zoo's website Tusko has been removed from the list of elephants at the zoo... Is he being transferred?

Yes, Rose-Tu is pregnant, an article also says that Packy is post reproductive. Rama has been recommended to breed with Chendra, but he didn't know how to properly mate her, so it looks like they'll be pairing her with Tusko as well.

The same article mentioned nothing about Tusko being paired with Chendra.

Has the zoo announced any timelines for construction of their new elephant complex or released any graphics of what it will look like?

Update: It occurred to me to look at the Oregon Zoo website and they do have quite a bit of information, including graphics, about their planned new elephant complex: http://www.oregonmetro.gov/index.cfm/go/by.web/id=36542

    Update from a Portlandian

Rose-Tu (18 in August) is getting pretty big now. Shes due anytime from October to December of this year. Tusko is the father.
Shine is still being bred, but because of her age (30 this December), she's been having difficulty getting pregnant.
Chendra (19) appears to have some problem with ovulation, so they're training her for artificial insemination.

Packy's genes are well-represented, so he will not be bred. Rama's having trouble, so they might train him for AI. Tusko is 41, and still has a few years of fertility left, so he's the only breeding male at this time. Samudra is getting to the age of having to leave the herd, so he might be breeding in about ten years.
