Are they wild or domesticated camels in Minnesota
Old 22-07-2009

I read this article in AZA's Connect magazine about Minnesota zoo just had two baby bactrain camels born. Here is the confusing part. With the way the article was written, it seems to me that Minnesota zoo has a breeding group of wild bactrain camels. And I don't know any known zoo ( except Beijing Zoo ) or institution that would have any wild bactrain camels. Could anyone help to clear this point for me? Does the Minnesota zoo have the wild bactrain camels or the domesticated bactrain camels?

I don't know anything about the particular animals at Minnesota but suspect they are domestic Bactrians . In the UK many collections make a big thing out of births of domestic Bactrian camels , claiming they are breeding a critically endangered species , which is nonsense .

As far as i know, Beijing Zoo quite famously keeps the only wild bactrian camel in captivity (an elderly male off show, if i'm correct).
