A well-kept San Diego secret?
Old 01-08-2008

Look at the December 2007 entry. Had anyone heard of them having this?

I've seen a pangolin listed for San Diego on ISIS but thought it was an error...

Hopefully it's correct, i'd love to see them more in zoos!

What a surprise!
I remember a few years ago L.A. received a pangolin that was confiscated from some people at the airport trying to bring it into the US as a pet ... it was very young, and survived for several months in the nursery section. There was lots of press coverage about this pangolin, but San Diego's are definitely flying under the radar!

FYI, the ISIS animal is an error, but a recent one. Apparently this pair has bred, but the offspring did not survive.

Imagine, if they've kept this from us for so long, what else are they hiding? Tarsiers? Saiga? Douc langurs? Thylacines???

Probably! I heard that the zoo has an extra facility by SDWAP that is off limits to the public, so they could have almost any animal in that place.

They have multiple off-exhibit facilities at both the zoo and the park actually. I wonder where the thylacines are being kept.

That makes it more of a reality that they do have some rare animals hidden from us.

Here's some more insight from this month's Zoonooz:

"In the Children's Zoo...the two African White-bellied Tree Pangolins, Baba and Baka,...you might catch a glimpse of our unique pangolings when they're out and about during speical events and animal presentation."

I just gleamed all of the important imformation from the paragraph in the magazine.

Yes! I've seen the male. Beautiful animal indeed. Because this species needs temperature controlled exhibits the pair isn't in public view but keepers try to bring them out periodically for people to see this amazing creature.
