Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo? - 2012

Sumatran Rhino Update. Suci/Ipuh.

I'm duplicating here a question I put on the 'Sumatran Rhino' thread in the Wildlife Conservation forum..

Do you know how long they have been attempting to mate Suci & Ipuh together? Has he in fact successfully mated her? If Suci is not so far pregnant, any idea what problems there may be apart from Ipuh's age?

 

The zoo mated them together. That plan has been over for a couple of months and from what I have heard, the zoo is receiving sperm from a rhino in Borneo.

Thanks for the link. A very interesting interview with Terri Roth, which updates the current situation for me. Most interesting and she seems quite outspoken now about Indonesia's refusal to send them any more animals- presumably born out of frustration with the current situation.

From this it seems Ipuh hasn't been able to actually successfully mate Suci as she tires him out beforehand during the 'courtship' phase, and so they have abandoned that in favour of attempting AI, from the only captive male unrelated to her, which is Kertam, the one in Borneo.

 

As said from fellow member Kudu21, no. Ipuh is pretty old and has little energy while Suci is only 8 and is very eccentric so they did not mate properly.

In other news, a hooded merganser chick has hatched recently.

 

Glad to help By the why I saw the changes to the zoo and it felt weird seeing the gliders in it's new exhibit. I was also disappointed on seeing that there were no changes to that area except for the species. I felt bad for the kingfisher being in a place that is 10 times smaller than it's original home. By the way with the harp wire situation, I did notice that the wires were thinner than the last time I saw so maybe they did change it. Thanks for the bongo info, that is so exciting! Lastly I am going to the zoo every Tuesday this summer and I will get many, many pictures of Savanna

Riger, the male fishing cat, has passed away.

 

Aww, that's a shame. I was wondering why it was impossible to see the other cat.

I passed by the nursery and here's the current list of animals.

Adams and Rocko and Jaz in the same exhibit

I also got a glimpse of the snow leopard exhibit and it is super-looking. People won't complain about it now. Also the path between Monkey Island and to Night Hunters is closed because the zoo is adding an entrance to Cat Canyon.

 

I hate to ask but what are these animals?
As you can probably gather, I'm not from Cincy, not familiar with the nursery and am intrigued...

 

I wouldn't blame even if you didn't tell me to Adams is a Parma wallaby that was born in 2009. Don and Tom are Bennett's wallabies that were born in September 2011. Rocko and Jaz are also Bennett's wallabies that were born in 2007-8(?). Lucy is a bearcat that was born in 2007. She is the Cincinnati Bearcat football team's mascot.

 

Thanks for that, my curiosity has been satisfied now.
I was just worried that I may be missing out on some unusual species hand-rearing!
Turns out they're wallabies... And a binturong! Which is a lot more impressive in my eyes.

 

Both of this year's kea chicks are male.

thats so sad. How many fishing cats do they have now? Im wondering if cincy zoo will get one of the fishing cat kittens born 7 months ago at the columbus zoo? National zoo in wash d.c. had a pair of kittens and the father is Lek born at the cincy zoo.
