What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo? - 2012
Old 05-01-2012

A new thread to start off the new year!

Three weeks ago an African Penguin chick hatched at the zoo. It will be hand raised to take part in the Wings of Wonder Bird Show, and it will debut in the show this spring.

Ah sorry Kudu did not see this post about the penguin chick. I also thought this thread was going to be about wildebeests coming to the zoo.

Anyways here's something to go along with this. There is a new screaming hairy armadillo baby named Cooper that was born at the zoo.

I was merely trying to be creative, albeit quite generic , with the title of the new thread. No real wildebeest unfortunately!

There are actually two Screaming Hairy Armadillo pups! "Cooper" has a sister named "Alice". It's nice to see that the zoo's pair is breeding well.

I read the Tweet and saw the name Alice, but wasn't she the one that was born last year? Or are they twins?

Screaming Hairy Armadillos generally give birth to multiple pups, so I'd assume that they are twin litter mates. That and the fact that there were three pups born in last year's litter.

The Screaming Hairy Armadillo pups are actually quadruplets! In addition to "Alice" and "Cooper", the other two pups are named "Axl" and "Rose". It seems the keepers have quite the sense of humor, or they at least a heavy taste in music!

The name of our main page on here just went from the Cincinnati Zoo to it's full name along with many other zoos. Sim or another admin must have read my mind because I was about to request this.

King Penguins Leaving Exhibit - Cincinnati Zoo - YouTube

Here's a video of the King Penguins leaving their indoor exhibit in Wings of the World to go out to the outdoor penguin exhibit in the Children's Zoo. During the warmer months the exhibit in the Children Zoo is occupied by the zoo's Little Blue Penguin colony, but during January and February the zoo's King Penguins use the exhibit. The penguins "parade" across the zoo to and from the outdoor exhibit at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. respectively. This is all a part of the zoo's Penguin Days , January 2nd-February 29th, where the zoo offers half priced admission. Other events during Penguin Days include Polar Bear fish-cicles, sea lion treats, elephant fruit-cicles, Japanese Macaque feedings, insect encounters, and Kea encounters. Those events, however, only happen on the weekends, whereas the Penguin Parades are everyday.

Hahaha, so cute. Much, much better intro to their videos this year. You can tell in this video that it was made before November because you can see Illusion.

Today is the fourth birthday of Lucy, one of the zoo's four Binturongs. She serves as an animal ambassador at the zoo, as well as the mascot for the University of Cincinnati. She makes appearances at most of the home men's basketball games

Here's a video about the Blue Death Feigning Beetle, one of the newest additions to the World of the Insect.

Here's a video of the zoo's daily Penguin Parade.

The zoo's solar canopy over the Vine Street parking lot has taken the zoo off the grid for 99 hours since April.

Plans are under way for the zoo's 13-year-old female Polar Bear, Rizzo, to move to the Buffalo Zoo in hopes she will breed with their male, Nanuq. She's been together with the Cincinnati Zoo's male, Li'l One, for a good number of years without success.

Turns out that plans have since changed, and Rizzo will instead be going to the Hogle Zoo for the opening of their new exhibit, Rocky Shores.

In other news, on the travel website, Ten Best, the Cincinnati Zoo is currently ranking second in the poll for the "Best Zoos" Travel Award. The Columbus Zoo is ranking first.
