Great news for the zoo! Minnesota Zoo has been under a bit of a resurgence lately, as the "Russia's Grizzly Coast" exhibits are award-worthy and they've had their highest attendance this year in probably 30 years.

The meerkat exhibit was one of the more popular of my photos that I've uploaded here, as it showed the massive elephant skull (complete with huge tusks) in the enclosure. It's too bad that it's being shifted to another part of the zoo, but Minnesota is on a roll with the improvements!

It was infamous for an incident (darn small children) that resulted in the death of a meerkat. Im sure they'll overdue the neccessary design to keep meerkats in and children out!

it was euthanized. A small girl climbed up on the exhibit through some small crevaces in the gunite and reached out to touch one of the meerkats. Which bit her hand. It had to be euthanized for rabies? (or some other disease) testing.

Indeed they are. They just created a new staff position of Director for Capital Improvements

Despite the economy, Minnesota Zoo is doing surprisingly well with its captial campaign. We may get to see new improvements sooner rather than later!

I like how it states in the article that the money will be used to make the zoo one of the top ten. Didn't anybody tell the Minnesota Zoo that they've been on many top ten lists for the past few years.

Dont say that! The zoo is trying to be modest so donors will give more money if they think their money will make their zoo better than all the other zoos Marketing my friend!

The success of "Russia's Grizzly Coast" has been exceptional, and I think that the attendance at the zoo has been the highest this year in close to three decades! The new set of habitats has totally rejuvenated an already decent zoo, and the grizzly bear enclosure is one of the best of its kind in North America, the sea otter exhibit is perhaps the #1 that I've ever seen, the leopard exhibit was criticized by me after seeing it last summer but now I realize that it is also the best of its kind, and the wild boar enclosure is also well worth a look. I'd be alarmed if this zoo did not gain even more publicity with the garnering of the AZA Best Exhibit Award for 2008, and I'm glad to hear that there is enough money for a new entrance and visitor's centre.
