Terry Maple is a legend in the zoo world, but can his name recognition elevate a zoo that is in the shadow of the big guns in Florida? We'll have to wait and see what is in the new masterplan, and I'm extremely curious as to what it entails.

Well i figure might as well write my opinion in this matter, i tend to be very passionate and detailed so i rather read other members opinions and keep mine to myself, but i will give it a try.

First off, i agree with snowleopard to an extend, the part that i agree with you on is that given the current layout of the west palm beach zoo and the available land* to expand, it might be a challenge to create a collection diverse enough to take the leading spot in Florida, and to actually become the leading zoo, when an individual talks about visiting a florida zoo, usually they are talking about Miami Metrozoo, Disney's Animal Kingdom*, Busch Gardens Africa, even the Tampa zoo for that matter, i know some of the members here are fans of the Jacksonville zoo, I for one can't say anything good or bad about this zoo since i have never been there. I agree with some of you that you actually have to visit a zoo to be able to really connect or disconnect to it, with a few exceptions. I love San Diego Zoo, never been there.

Now here is where i part ways with you, given the current state of zoos in florida, we could say, DAK is not a zoo, they don't call themselves a zoo, so why rank it as a zoo in the first place (i love the place), if DAk is not a zoo then BGA is not even close to been a zoo, just look at the amount of space invested in rides, both of this parks are gorgeous, but are not true zoological parks. When i think of a zoo i think of Berlin Zoological Gardens, San Diego Zoo, Bronx Zoo, i could go on and on, so it brings me to my next point, Miami Metrozoo, excellent animal collection, very large available land, sky is the limit with this place, then again maybe that is the problem, trust me there is a problem, when every single time i go there, all i hear, mostly is complaints from patrons. Well, is not Metrozoo's fault, their staff works really hard in this place, is really the natural disasters, the men made disasters and the yet to come disasters, that is the problem. Miami Dade County is really a pain to deal with when it comes to funding, trust me i know, having worked around them for 6 years, goverment officials, judges, elected public figures, you name it. The miami metrozoo lacks where the west palm beach zoo shines. Palm beach zoo, has everything going for it, excellent plant collection, mature trees, outstanding layout, with the exception of some areas, they are already on the lead in this department.

I will never forget one day i was at miami metrozoo, in an area that they call the Asian river life exihbit, and a couple walked by, the guy tells the girl, "you see this area, this is more like it, this is what the palm beach zoo looks like", i had an idea after that, take the Wings of Asia aviary out of there, the Asian river life exihbit and give them to the West palm beach zoo, and Miami Metrozoo has nothing exceptional to show, just every other enclosure looks about the same, where is the imagination, or is it a problem of bad funding? Take a look at the recent Amazon and Beyond exihbit, i have been following this baby ever since it became official, i have boxes of info on this place, a collection of thoughts and ideas, all for what?, they deserve a lot of credit, went ahead with the project and the end result came out pretty good, give it a few years, when some of the trees grow and the mistakes are corrected or not, and you will have a much better product. But this is not the agressive attitute that a zoo, where its former director made a challenge of "Our goal is to beat San Diego" needs to have, you have to be ready day one. As a former proffesional fighter i learn one thing, almost does not count, you can't come to a fight in almost good shape, why open up an exihbit half way sensational, they brought in the animals, the species did they part, the designers did their best, the plans were brilliant, where did they go wrong.

I went for the special preview a week before our Road Trip sensational member went, it was a screening for members, i had a 6 page report on the exihbit, i took note on every single aspect, but at the end i decided it was best for him to do it, did not want to take that away, he needed to be the first to review, after that i just lost interest. I did a mini survey with other members after walking a couple of laps around the place, and the general response was shocking, it was the same, "it was really good, i mean, have to give it some time, i don't know maybe i expected a little too much" some members were not as nice as this lady, one old guy from Peru told me, and they call this the Amazon?.

The biggest letdown of this exihbit for me, believe it or not was not the landscape, but the actual aquarium, after so much praise for this GIANT tank, me and my girlfriend almost felt back after looking at an average aquarium tank, like most of you have seen plenty, take a look a Berlin's circular tropical aquarium hall, now that is a tropical display, i guess Miami spent their money on the deco design. Anyways i went on for too long and went off the track, and this is exactly what i warned you about, there is a couple of things in life that i can talk forever about, one has no relation to this, and the other is my biggest passion in the world zoo's.

So my final thought on the topic, i hope this men does a good job, if they can work something out with Lion Country Safari and get a decent lineup of ungulates, then they have a chance to blow any and everybody out of the water, add to this some very decent space of land for African enclosures, and please take your time, do it like you did your Amazon area, attention to detail is the key, take as much time as you need.

By the way the best thing that could happen to the Palm Beach zoo, is for Lion Country Safari to have a reduction in their animal numbers, have you seen the place lately?, I went on a trip there a couple of months back, Not good, makes metrozoo look like a tropical rainforest paradise. They could really use the money it seems, so take a couple of antelopes of each species and send them to the West Palm Beach Zoo, maybe they can get something they need in return. Anyways west palm is already great, so a big gun i don't know about that, a lot of it is marketing and Miami owns that, do they deserve the leading role, not in my opinion, but who am i anyways, not an important individual, since the zoo failed to reply to me several times, on different issues. I emailed San diego the other day, a real silly question, probably one of you could have given me the answer, one day later i get an email, guess who it was.

    love you
    Danny

There is now a second puma cub - one orphaned in Idaho plus the one orphaned in Washington (as mentioned in the above post).

Here is a brief article about it, that shows someone is completely clueless. I am not sure if the author made the mixup or the zoo gave them misinformation. But the start of the article states two florida panthers will go on display. It even goes on to quote the zoo director saying how important it is to promote animals from their own region. The article then goes on to say one cub was rescued in Washington and the other cub rescued in Idaho. Say what?

Several Indian Peafowl chicks hatched recently and can be seen wandering around the zoo behind their mother.

The cougars that came from Washington and Idaho were renamed. I know one was renamed Osceola.
Two male Bush Dog pups were born in January, but their mother, Mediana, died of cancer after the pups were weaned. Their father, Oscito, has been doing a great job as dad and raising the pups by himself.
Timmy, the Baird's Tapir, will be leaving for Los Angeles later this summer as he was recommended for breeding.

This is very interesting. This whole time I thought the zoo would have the old male Baird's Tapir for the new Rainforest of the Americas exhibit, but it appears the zoo will indeed be getting a breeding pair. I wonder where the female will come from.
