Aren't these the only ones in the UK? Does the group breed or is it due to die out in the next few years as the present bears get older and older?

They are the only ones in the UK cannot remember the last time they had any young but its got to have been more than 10 years ago now.

Well you can cuddle one if you want but leave me out of it. In the wild in the US Black Bears are just as unpredictable and potentially lethal as the larger Browns/Grizzlies. a number of people have been killed by them. One of the worst cases involving Black Bear killing was many years ago when one killed four(I think it was) boys who were out on a fishing trip- their remains were found buried along the river bank- the bear had raked earth and brush over each corpse as it would do if it was a deer carcass. Still want to cuddle one....?

They're apparently not as old I thought - if I remember correctly the keeper I spoke to said at least one is only 6 years old.

Anyone know where they got them from originally?

ummm no Pertinax!

Is it unusual for a safari park to have bears as part of a drive through?

(Sorry, I couldn't resist that gruesome story....)
Its the only one I've been in but I don't go to many Safari Parks. Certainly Longleat/West Mids or Knowsley haven't got them.

There was a 'Loch Lomond Bear park' a while ago (is it closed?) but I don't know if their reserves were drive through- or if there are bears in Safari Parks in Europe.

Just stumbled across this thread...

I'd love to know who you spoke to about the ages of the bears! zoogiraffe you got it correct. The last bear born was in 1998, so he'll be 13 this year. Coincidentally he is also the one that enjoys walking between cars and stealing hubcaps - curse of being the youngest perhaps?!

Suffice to say someone who didn't work with the bears directly, though it's quite possible it's my memory rather than their info that was in error!

Thanks for the correction, either way!
