A brand new Percheron Horse exhibit will open next year. They will live on 4.7 acres in a privately funded and donated exhibit that will demonstrate how horse used to play such a big roll in Canadian lives. The polar bear and seal tunnels are closed for the next several weeks. Some leaks and bear damage has occurred and needs to be repaired before winter sets in. The bears will be in other yards until the repair is complete. The closures length will depend on what needs to be done.

Sad news coming from the Zoo. A gate was left open between 2 tiger exhibits and 19 year old Baikal was killed in a fight with a younger male. Baikal had been at the Zoo for 5 years and was apparently owned by Toronto Zoo. Tiger killed in fight with another tiger at Assiniboine Park Zoo | Globalnews.ca
Baikal was indeed born in Toronto on Sept 3 1995 to Tonghua and Pam along with sister Kita (now in Calgary). He as a single daughter Sarma (at Cherry Brook I believe). He was also the uncle of Vitali who was in Toronto for two years. In sad twist of fate he was killed by his own grandnephew. Vasili and Samkha are the sons Katja, daughter of Baikal's own litter mate Kita. Not that it matters to tigers even if they could know that but on a human level just adds another layer of saddness.

The male will be Blizzard, Jack or Keewatin while his sister will be Crystal, Trinity or Star.
