Rocktons elephants
Old 11-05-2008

Maybe one of our North Amercan members might know the numbers of Asian elephants at Rockton these days I do know they are still producing babies with great success.

I was told when I was there in 97 they were hoping to have 15 animals in the furture, also I would be interested to know how many Breeding bulls they have on site now, at that time Calvin seemed to be the main breeding bull with a number of bulls out on breeding loans to other zoos in North America. I feel this is the best herd of Asain elephants that I have seen in my zoo visits.

Yea. Calvin moved to Hannover zoo, Germany in 2000. He has since farthered Califa 2003, Farina 2003, Tarak 2005 and a new young bull born 6 May 2008. Apparently he is soon due to move again so he doesn't breed his two 5 yr old daughters. Also another bull Nikolai (Also born at Rockton - 1993) has returned from Amsterdam earlier this year to mate with the females after impregnating the female in Amsterdam.

Yeah very productive has many calves to come as well, 7 calves were born in american zoos and four of his calves are in the EEP, so many more offspring to go. Which is great not many breeding elephants of the Sri Lankan subspecies.
