African Rainforest Pavilion Review! 2008
________________________________________
I have not been to the zoo in a while, so if I do make some mistakes, or forget an exhibit please let me know.
This pavilion was built when the zoo opened and underwent renovation with and expanded with a gorilla rainforest exhibit. It is the largest indoor gorilla habitat in the world. The pavilion may be undergoing renovation in winter 2008. This pavilion is filled the lots of real plants, it is nice and includes a variety of species.
Mandrills: The mandrills have a great exhibit, maybe cover the stairs in their exhibit somehow and maybe add some more shrubs. This exhibit along with the majority of the Southside of the African Pavilion will be renovated. Hopefully they might get an outdoor exhibit.
Small Tanks/Exhibits: The majority of the small exhibits and tanks are great; they take after the real world greatly. The tanks seem to be filled with plants and seem to all be healthy. (This includes all the small aquariums and small exhibits including the Aba Aba and the Ornate Nile Monitor)
Red River Hogs/Warthogs: This exhibit is good for the Red River Hogs and Warthogs; however it is not good for the pygmy hippo that lives in it now. I know the pigs are very destructive but maybe add some foliage that can hang down over the walls of their exhibit.
Pygmy Hippos: Overall this exhibit is small, but not horrible. The bridge you have to walk across is a neat idea, but I do think they deserve a lot more room. If they can just expand this exhibit to twice the size it would be greatly suited for these creatures. The sandy parts, the island of plants and the pool are all great; all they need is more room!
Scared Ibis/Spoonbills/ Egyptian Goose: this exhibit seems small for the amount of birds they have but, I do like it here. The smell can upset someone’s stomach but these birds seem to love it. Maybe add a real tree that the birds could nest in.
Meerkats: In all a good exhibit. The meerkats do have the choice to go through underground tunnels but the exhibit seems fake. It would be nice if they had access outside. The zoo could easily do this by putting a door (like a doggy door) in one of the back window and use a small yard outside. They should a few hilly hills for them. Does the zoo plan on breeding them?
Lake Malawi: This take is great in some people’s eyes, but knowing a thing or to about fish, this is not a great aquarium. The fish are way to over crowded, they should have there own territories and hiding places, they can do a lot more the just stick 2000 fish in one large tank. What the zoo should do is put lots of rocks and minimize the number of fish in the tank.
The African River Fish Tanks: Excellent setup and display of the tanks, BTW I have not seen the African Lungfish in a while. Did he die or which tank is he in?
West African Dwarf Crocodile: Excellent exhibit, a brilliant display of animals and plants, most of the walls are covered and this is the way all exhibits should be for every animal!
Spotted Necked Otter: This exhibit is a bad one, with almost no privacy for these animals it’s not that great, and the zoo should have the same amount of room as the Canadian Otters. If they made a replica of the Canadian Otters exhibit in the African Pavilion, the otters would love it!
Lowland Gorilla: A great exhibit, as mentioned before this exhibit is the largest indoor gorilla habitat in the world. They have a great exhibit but having more foliage would make it even better. The day room needs to be more natural, but it does provide the gorillas with lots of climbing space. The outside yard is great as well for the use of climbing space, it is a bit small for a troop of gorillas, maybe enlarge it a bit, but don’t loose the climbing space. Many zoos around the world have large exhibits but they lack in lots of climbing space. The Toronto Zoos gorilla’s exhibit had a number of climbing opportunities and the gorilla’s seem to love it!
Nocturnal Section: these exhibits are good although they could modify the whole area. If they decided to do a renovation to this area I think they should add some more species and keep the ones already there. You should be able to walk in and the first thing you see is a black wall, the turn right to go into the “African Cave” Then you get into the cave, here you walk along a wooden bridge and there is a small river flowing though the area. You make your way around the cave and end up facing the back the black wall, and then you exit on the left of where you came in.
Overall: The African Rainforest Pavilion is great, after there renovations in the winter it will be much better, this pavilion is one of the best but has its flaws but, it will continue to be the best to many people.
African Savanna Review! 2008
________________________________________
Elephants: The elephants have a large enough yard when half of the herd is on display. They should and might be expanding the paddock and a new elephant house so the herd can be on display all year long would be essential. Why does the public not able to go in there anymore?
Hippo: The hippos have a good exhibit, it could be improved. If the zoo added an underwater viewing it would be great for the public in the Toronto area to see. They should do an exhibit like the Inturi Forest at the San Diego Zoo. Expanding the exhibit and have another yard built where the African Shamba Farm is, with an underground viewing and a complete updated area there. That way the zoo can breed an amazing species better than ever.
Warthogs (outdoor): This exhibit is good for such a destructive animal; they should have some more foliage hanging over the side of the exhibit. The red river hogs should be displayed here as well as the warthogs in the summer.
The Zebras, Kudus, Rhinos, and Storks: This exhibit is excellent, it replicates the African savanna, the only thing I would change is add some more vegetation in an island area in between the zebras and rhinos and also hide the fence that divides the enclosures. The Zoo should open up all the exhibits so that they can rotate through them to be like a real savanna and all the animals should be able to get to the watering hole.
Cheetah: This exhibit is good for cheetahs, but a large African tree or a real large tree in the middle of the exhibit to add to the boringness, or they can but a pile of rocks in the middle so that it looks like they are watching the nearby prey (other savanna exhibits)
Baboons: Good exhibit, all they need to add is some more vegetations maybe a forest in the back middle area.
Ostrich: Great exhibit, with some trees and they need to put an emphasis on a centre piece or something, and also add more trees and shrubs.
Lion: The lion exhibit is great for the lions, the Kjope idea is amazing. The lions do have an off exhibit yard. This exhibit does seem old maybe remodeling the underground part of it, with some signs and other interesting facts.
Hyenas: Great Exhibit, maybe alternate the hyenas and a different species such as wild dogs. This exhibit is not one f the greatest exhibits but, it could be updated, and added more foliage is essential.
Giraffe: Excellent, and can not be changed maybe adding a feeding deck, but to add anything to an animal exhibit it should be researched first. Other species in this exhibit could be a neat mixed species exhibit.
Seals: The exhibit itself is great, they did have access to a grassy area, and they should have access again. The zoo should get more, but since they are a Phase Out species this would be perfect for a colony of penguins. The penguins may bring the attendance level of the zoo up a lot.
There is an exhibit outdoors for the male mandrills and they should develop the rest of this are to add more animal exhibits, maybe add a pavilion here to house Madagascar species, and they defiantly need Columbus monkeys and howler monkeys. And also add bongo and okapi, leopards also would be a great addition. The future of the zoo should be great!
