Map - 1975

I think from 1975, although purchased on a 1977 visit. Shows Polar Bear enclosure near to the 'Bear/Dog Row', but separated by some deer enclosures. This is how I remember it, not exactly the same area as the other bear enclosures. The 'Bear Caves' (still there as a historical display) is shown as enclosures for canids - No.35. Nocturnal House not shown, although certainly there on visits in 1976 and 1977 (perhaps even earlier) - although area shown as 'under construction' adjacent Angelo Street border. Bear pits not shown, but again, I think they were still in use at this stage. I have so far failed completely to find any pics of these but I think they were near to the Mill Point Road entrance. The little 'castle' enclosure for otters (originally guinea pigs, then penguins) also not shown, but definitely there and in use for otters at this time, possibly labelled for previous use - No.3? or maybe green spot unlabelled next to No.4? Note vast kangaroo enclosures at top of hill at northern border......relative to the other parts of the zoo these enclosures were very large and naturalistic....

Castle enclosure for the guinea pigs, then s/c otters would be exhibit numbered 57.

Interesting to see the exhibits numbered and laid out in the 70s compared to how I remember seeing the remains of/renovated older exhibits during the 90s. Many have now completely gone due to later exspansions notably the elephants. Crocodile ponds, Penguin pond, Orang dome, monkey and cat rows, foundation walls of the puma/lynx/tree kangaroo, echidna enclosure and even the stone mountain used by the tahr (repurposed and moved into the rock wallaby exhibit still existing and were often being used.
