This a tragedy, this is not how these bans should occur. Let other countries take notice, it makes no sense to ban wild animals in circuses unless you are absolutely sure where they will go for a permanent home. The ban on use of circus animals went into effect this week with terrible results and zoos try to save what animals they could. First, Profepa ( procudaria federal de protección al medio ambiente) said that they would establish wildlife sancutuaries for circus animals, but that the circuses should donate the animals for free. Circus owners and trainers said that it is simply robbery and that they would not comply. In Merida, a circus abandoned 20 animals in their cages in a abandoned lot. Animaya zoo recieved the animals including camels, white tigers and baboons, some of which died from hunger and overexposure. Morelia zoo recieved merry, an african elephant from a circus and now the elephant has just died. Africam safari and Neza zoos say they will recieve animals and pay the circus owners a just price. Various persons who have circus animals say that if zoos do not recieve their animals that would rather shoot them than give them away for free. The Partido Verde had originally said that animal rights groups in the US would gladly pay to send animals to sanctuaries in the US. Of course, it was a lie. Profepa has said that circuses can keep their animals while they recieve an adequate home, but that is not a permanent solution. It is estimated that there are over 500 circus animals still without a home. This not how it should be done. Circus animals must not be banned until they have an alternative home.
They should go to zoos or sanctuaries or private owners. There should have been some kind of back-up plan in place beforehand.
Various of the most important zoos in Mexico (Africam safari, chapultepec,) have stated that most circus animals are in bad health or mistreated and cannot be added to their collections. Where will they go ?
Profepa has authorized the first transport of mexican circus animals to a U.S. sanctuary. The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Denver, Colorado will recieve 8 lions, 1 puma, 2 bobcat and 1 coyote from a mexican circus.
