      Its face looks like that of a booted but its limb coloration looks Moor-ish.

      Edit: After some quick research, it looks like a Tonkean Macaque, Macaca tonkeana.

      It always surprises me how grimy places like these get such rare animals.

      Can anyone else concur with my findings? I have a feeling that the brow is still too flattened to be a Tonkean.

      Because they're not so openly standing in the public limelight as large accredited institutions, and thus do not have to attest as rigorously to their animal sources?

      I'd agree on the Tonkean macaque identification.

      AZA institutions regularly source from private breeders, especially with carnivores to supplement the current gene pool. A lot of fishing cats seem to be sourced this way. Not to mention the vast amounts of reptiles and birds that are bought from questionable importers. My problem is that it is still very expensive to buy from these people when you are a small, cagey (sorry for the pun) zoo like this.

      I highly doubt they sourced this monkey from someone who didn't know what it was and didn't realize how much it would go for. That is what puzzles me. It also puzzles me that I have come across at least one other private individual with a Sulawesi macaque other than a crested. Where did they get them from?

      Other than snow monkeys and lion-tailed macaques are there any macaques remaining in AZA accredited zoos?
    • Batto
      @Pacarana:
      AZA zoos of course still source animals from animal traders and private breeders-in particular species they cannot breed adequately due to conditions entailed to public display and visitor demands (like mixed species aviaries), but also lack of interest/knowledge regarding breeding. Nevertheless, the majority of these are most "C-" or "D-"listed species, if so to speak, such as the mentioned reptiles, fish, birds, invertebrates etc. The common visitor, federal officer and last but not least animal right activist in general only pay little if any attention to their whereabouts. Non-accredited zoos and private institutions, however, like this one, might not be able to obtain an okapi, but can get species AZA zoos would have problems to attest the legality of origin. Like the Marine and Galapagos land iguanas kept by a Swiss private breeder.

      Who's claimed that Franklin Drive Thru Safari doesn't know the species of said macaque? Wasn't me.

      Swiss marine iguanas? What! Do you know who's keeping them?
