Half October a very rare birth took place at Buenos Aires : a Giraffe gave birth to twins. One of the 2 was however quit weak and died some time later .
From my recent visit to Buenos Aires zoo here are some observations: Nice brand new signs sponsered by Coca Cola. Good renovations for the exhibit for the now famous orangutan Sandra, who is a non human person with a habeas corpus according to the courts. New climbing structure, tall glass windows replace dangerous dry moat, plenty of enrichment. Sandra was doing quite well, watching people under a blanket and sometimes looking for bugs or seeds in the grass. She seems very well adjusted to the Buenos Aires zoo. The remaining giraffe calf is doing well. There are various good breeding programs for argentine fauna including brocket deer, maned wolf and condor. A neotropical otter replaced the water monitor in the outdoor exhibit between the reptile house and the aquarium. The only australian fauna left are the emus. Kangaroos all gone. The very nice free flight aviary was closed. There was interesting exhibit at the entrance on the plight of the last 200 wild jaguars left in Argentina. I hope you enjoy my pictures on the gallery.
