Taman Safari zoo safe for visitors despite incident
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Jakarta | Sat, August 18 2012, 2:48 PM

The management of Taman Safari Zoo in Cisarua, Bogor, West Java, guaranteed the zoo’s safety for visitors despite Friday's incident in which one of its workers was mauled to death by a Sumatran tiger.

Zoo spokesman Yulius H Suprihardo said on Saturday that its collection of tigers would not harm visitors as they were surrounded by three-meter high gates.

“We guaratee that Taman Safari is safe for visitors. This was the first such incident and we hope it will be the last,” Yulius said as quoted by kompas.com.

A janitor at the zoo, identified as Junaedi, 32, was mauled to death by the tiger on Friday. Junaedi, who was busy trimming grass in the Sumatran tiger compound when the incident occurred, was not aware that the tiger was stalking him.

The tiger suddenly attacked Junaedi, who died instantly at the scene with wounds to his head, hands and legs.

“We have no idea how he ended up there. Our regulations require all staff members to report to the tiger keepers before entering the compund and there was no report from him at the time of the incident,” Yulius said.

He added said that the management would let the police investigate the incident. (swd)

Pretty surprising eh, one of the best and most professional zoo in Indonesia have their staff mauled by tigers in site. Indonesia's zoo really need some professional management.

This has been a long time coming and has been planned for more than 2 years ago. It will be interesting what the entire panda complex looks like and if some more tropical Chinese species might arrive in due course.

Not sure how many Komodo dragons they have at the moment. Their exhibit houses a pair I believe.

Article says he was moved there for medical treatment and it would then be decided whether or not to release him back to the wild. I am sure we all hope this will happen. If not, then I sincerely hope he will be able to breed in captivity and put new genes into the captive bloodline.
