The fascinating story behind Adrian Simpson should be made into a movie! Perhaps Sim could have a cameo appearance...

Court dismisses zoo fraud charges

Charges against a man who allegedly impersonated a Western Plains Zoo employee were dismissed yesterday under Section 32 of the Mental Health Act in Mudgee Local Court.
Adrian Simpson, 19, from Gulgong, faced fraud charges as a result of impersonating a zoo employee on a number of occasions from September 2007 until February this year.

Simpson’s defence solicitor Allan Hogan applied for a non-publication order on the case.

Replying to Mr Hogan’s submission, Magistrate Hodgson said the case was “certainly newsworthy”.

“These are serious false pretence and property offences, he obviously presented himself very well,” Magistrate Hodgson said. “I have to weigh up public interest against a mental disorder and on this occasion attention should not be diverted from the criminal justice system.”

Prosecutor Ken Brisbane said the case had an “unusual set of factual circumstances”.

He said Simpson had gone to a great deal of trouble to commit what were, in the opinion of the prosecution, serious offences.

Defence solicitor Hogan submitted a report confirming Simpson suffered from Asbergers Syndrome and a Narcissistic Personality Disorder. He told the court his client had already embraced counselling and psychiatric treatment.

“The aim is to modify Mr Simpson’s situation so that he does not appear before the court again on similar matters. I apply to have the matters dealt with under Section 32 of the Mental Health Act,” he said.

In dismissing the charges on the condition that Simpson does not commit similar offences for a period of six months, Mr Hodgson said he took into account the submissions and that he was already participating in a treatment plan.

Mr Hodgson also said that should Simpson re-offend he would be brought back before the court to be sentenced.

Outside court Mr Hogan said he was happy with the outcome.

Simpson was charged on February 21 after police executed a search warrant at his home and allegedly found zoo business cards in Simpson’s name stating he was the big cat handler.

"In dismissing the charges on the condition that Simpson does not commit similar offences for a period of six months"

Does that sound a bit odd to anybody else?

That is a typical excuse layers use to get criminals off scot free. It is either the drugs or alcohol made them do it or he has a mental health problem, it is never the criminals fault. The weak judges then allow them to get away with it, what ever happened to facing the consequences of your own actions.

onty while i generally agree with you don't dismiss the power of mental health issues so lightly. Adrian really does seem to have some major issues there and should have had someone keeping an eye out for him getting into ttrouble.

I have trouble believing he has a mental health problem which made him lie to businesses to make him shirts and other things so he could fool others into believing he was a zoo employee. What he did took a lot of planning and thought to get away with it for as long as he did.

The media claimed people who know him said he was like the bloke in the movie "Catch Me If You Can", but better.

Strange man. From outside he might seem entertaining, but he really exploits people's goodwill to others.

I hope they at least prevent him from entering the zoo again, for big cats will not be fooled by his pranks.

That was one of only three scandals here on Zoobeat...

There was:
- Adrian Simpson
- That guy that prompted Patrick to leave (zooworker?)
- The Swedish guy who tricked everyone into believing he owned a private zoo in Myanmar

LOL, the free time on some people's hands...

(I love a good scandal, myself!)

Of the three, though, Adrian and the Myanmar zoo owner were fakes, but zooworker turned out to be genuine. (Patrick was wrong.)
