Hey guys,
Just a joke, sorry, but in my bordeom recently after viewing a thread and some articles about zoos in europe selling animals to dealers I thought I'd do some investigating. So after my looking into animal dealers in europe I have been told that if money is not an option I could obtain a small herd of African Elephants, black or white rhino or just about anything. Now I know this is not possible guys. I have no intention of trying to import anything. I was told that this would however take some time years even BUT . . . . . Brown Bear CUBS North American Black Bear CUBS Arctic fox PUPS Could all easily be obtained (as cubs for hand rearing) within the next breeding season coming up soon. They also told me that Polar bear cubs can be obtained but you'd have to be willing to wait until the hype of zoos selling animals and the knut hype dies down a bit. They said it usually is not a problem for them to send animals anywhere and these guys are not a scam. Just something I thought interesting. Was wondering what you thought of it |

Well for a start, no one in Australia would get an import permit - it is illegal to trade diretly with overseas animal dealers in this country.
And of course you could guarantee that these cubs (not yet born), would all be captive-bred as we all know how reputable dealers are  .

Yeah, this is true. . . just a bit of fun. It is interesting to see what you could get if you were in europe or the like and had the permits (title of the thread mainly to stir Ara). I was shocked at how easy it would be. . . Quite Scarry in my opinion.

Could an Australian Zoo set up a base in Europe somewhere and take in these animals and then when they get the papers import the animals.

Hmmm although I would love to have these animals, as would many of us I don't think it would be a good idea. . . unless they get along great with horses, sheep and camels

hmmm sorry, I'll reword that. . . the dealer asked no questions regarding licensing or anything like that. . . i should have said . . how. . . available animals like this are.

Yeah good point. from what I've gathered from these guys they care who their animals go to or mind where they end up.

FYI, from the WAZA publication Building a Future for Wildlife
"The World Zoo Conservation Strategy published in 1993 stated ‘that the commercial wild animal trade as a source of zoo animals should cease as soon as possible. Such animals as must be collected from the wild, must be collected for specific educational and conservation purposes. They should not be chosen from dealers’ lists of animals randomly collected for commercial purposes. The Strategy also takes the long-term view that the placing of price tags on zoo animals may be counter-productive to fostering true conservation-based programmes. It therefore endorses the nil commercial value on conservation-sensitive zoo animals and requires that all national and supranational zoo associations develop policies towards the elimination of price tags where these still exist.’" |
