There seems to be some interest in the fact that a Razor Billed Curassow has disappeared from Taronga and now one has shown up in Melbourne Zoo. (I'm assuming that it's the same bird.)

According to ISIS, there are only 2 in the country, both hens. (The other is in Adelaide.)

I first noticed one at the old Natureland Zoo (which was at Kirra on the Gold Coast and which closed many years ago) and believe that this is probably the Taronga/Melbourne bird, although possibly not; in his history of Adelaide Zoo written in 1978, C.E. Rix states that while Adelaide has exhibited 4 different species of Curassows over the years "the Razor-billed has been the only member of the Family to breed successfully......At least 15 chicks have been reared over the past 10 years or so."

Yeah, only two females left in Australia. There are definitely no others. This was backed up by the head bird keeper at Adelaide zoo who I talked to recently.
