Hi everybody, my name is Peter Stolk, I'm from the Netherlands and this will be my first post.
I collect everything about elephants and zoos.
Part of this collection is a list with all captive elephants worldwide.
In this firts post I want to ask you all to complete my list for Australia and New Zealand. ;)

According to my list 27 elephants are living in Australia at the moment.
    Beerwah 0.3 Elephas maximus
    Dubbo 0.1 E.m. and 0.3 Loxodonta africana
    Melbourne 1.4 E.m.
    Perth 1.3 E.m.
    Sydney 1.4 E.m.
    Ashtons Circus 0.2 E.m.
    Lennon Brothers Circus 0.3 E.m.
    Stardust Circus 0.1 E.m.

New Zealand has 3 at the moment.
    Auckland 0.2 E.m.
    Whirling Brother Circus 0.1 L.a.

    Is this still correct?
I hope you folks will help me.

Later on I will ask you guys information about previous elephants to.

Ashtons circus no longer exists and 2 of their three elephants have since died. Lenoon Brothers don't have elephants. Dubbo has 2 female Africans.

    Cuddles all born in 1974
And I also have the name Congo, who according to my information died in 2000.

the info you have is correct, congo, the male, died from pnueominia in 2000, but there are still 3 female africans, i think jay meant 3, unless one has died which i dont believe because on this site, we have heaps of stuff to say about that ;).
recently, a male asiatic elephant also died at dubbo, around 18 months after his relocation from sydney.
of sydney and melbourne's elephant, 8 (3 females at melbourne) elephants were imported to australia from thailand to kick start our breeding population down under.
with the exception of melbournes 2 animals (one male and one female) and perths 4 all other asian elephants in the region, including dubbo's female, originated from circus backgrounds.

i know, i think the term we were looking at is demographic bottlenect, which we still face if we cant get the eles to breed.
besides all the conservation, education, bla bla bla stuff weve debated about on this forum, i think one of the reasons im so happy that the elephant import succeeded is because if it hadnt, we might have been looking in the not too distant future at zoos whose only representative of the 'charismatic mega fauna' would have been giraffes or white rhinos. at leas tnow we might have elephant, giraffe and rhinos ;)

when you think of it too, elephants are still so high to the list of desirable fauna that a zoo 'should have'. elephants, giraffes, bears, big cats and primates. people expect to see these elephants at the zoo dont they?

I think that they all died. Lenons, Ashtons and Bullens lost a lot of elephants in the past 40 years to vehicle accidents. At one time Bullens had 8 or nine eles, the three now at Australia zoo were the youngest.

According to this site Bullens at one time had 14! elephants.
In 2003, Siam, Bimbo and Sabu went to Australia Zoo they also say.

According to this site a elephant died at Taronga Zoo December 28th 1998.
Can somebody tell me the name of (and maybe some other information about) this elephant.

Through the internet I found some links that she died November 30th 1998.
So I will use that date.

On this link the three elephants from Lennon Brothers' are tempararily at Stardust.
I wunder what happened to them after that.
