just wondering what goals you guys would like to see acheived over the next 18 months for the regions zoos??? Some of these are a bit idealistic I admit
many of these are already in place, therefore any information on the status of these goals would be appreciated. Asiatic Golden Cat. Reccomended for phase-out, will the animals be sent offshore???? Sun Bear. Will animals be swapped to optimise chances of breeding??? Or will our zoos wait until we have just a tiny handful left then panic and consolidate them at Taronga??? Squirrel Monkey. White Ruffed Lemur. Maned Wolf. Brazillian and Malayan Tapir. Fishing Cat. Indian Rhino. Any idea on the status of the above programs?????? Any insider info appreciated. |

Is the phase-out of Sulawesi macaques from WA an actual recommendation? Is there another macaque species preferred?
Is it Seaworld's intention to breed polar bears? I thought that their involvement in a breeding program was limited. Is there a preferred langur species for the region? I would be guessing Francois...? Possibly difficult to obtain unrelated individuals? Certainly some of these ideas would strengthen the country's exotic collection. |

I would have to agree with everything you have said here Glyn,I hope much of it can be achieved, the only other want I would like to add is that I like to see Australia zoo expand with their primate collection.
On another note, I hope as you have said another female GI Rhino can be found for Dora maybe from some of the over repersentive bloodlines in the San Deigo and the Basel collections. Glyn, I think this thread is a very good idea maybe we can keep it going as a permanent thread and then on a yearly basis just up date on things? |

All of you down under can have US brazilian tapirs, their being phased out in the US to give room for Malayan and Baird's Tapirs.

My recomendation/goal for Victoria Zoos - Keep Werribee out of the hands of Victoria Roadshow!

Sulawesi Crested Macaques are on their way out, and it is highly unlikely that Perth Zoo will go it alone and continue the program exclusively. In this instance relocating the macaques to a smaller zoo such as Cairns Wildlide Safari or Mogo would be good as it would free up resources for reccomended primate species.
The Francois Langur program relies on new animals coming from China, one of the only sources of animals for our program here. There are certain limits in place which ultimately means Australia will need a holding facility for bachelor males until the program becomes viable. Seaworld participates in the SSP for Polar Bears and from the outset has always said they wanted to breed their bears. Seaworld has several bears representing valuable bloodlines which I imagine would be a priority for dispersal into the wider SSP. Beyond the conservation imperatives, the commercial lure of Polar Bear cubs would be, I imagine a strong motive to breed them and I hope they acheive this. |

Is Melbourne Zoo going to open their marine precinct in 2009? Does anyone know the specifics of the animal species that will be kept there, or is still up in the air?
Is the bull elephant paddock at Taronga opening in late 2008 or early 2009? |

snowleopard - at this stage the definites are...
subantarctic fur seal afro-australian fur seal little penguin australian pelican rumour has it there will be marine fish (rays were mentioned by zookiah) and things as well. |

thats good to hear - though probably obvious since the pelicans they share their lake with are also moving.

On the bull elephant paddock at Taronga - the map says 2008. Work was well underway on Friday. The impression at the Corroboree Frogs was that they had bred, but this was not certain; there were certainly many, many vivariums visible and a sign next to one near the window saying that something along the lines of "these young frogs bred at the zoo will be released". I wouldn't rely on that though, as my memory may be slightly faulty.

Its meant to be completed by december this year, in accordance with the trial outcomes on approval of the elephant importation. Doesnt mean it it acrnt be done sooner, if it looks to have lots of work done.
