Lions in AUS zoos
Old 17-08-2008

Hey - i am looking for some info on the following...

MOGO ZOO LIONS
I was at Mogo zoo a few days ago and am looking for some info on their lions;
- 'NARLA' was sharing a yard with 'KORA' and 'JABARI' who are her cubs from the March 2005 litter... what happened to 'MUJAMBI'?
- The only other lions on display (besides the white lions) were another adult male and female sharing a yard.
- where and when was 'NARLA' born?
- any info on the other lions; name/sex/b'date/origin/parents
- does anyone know of a lioness called 'CLAW' - i think she lived at MOGO but am not 100% sure...
- names of all the white lion cubs?

NATIONAL ZOO LIONS
- origins of the adults?

MELBOURNE ZOO
- 4 adult males all from the same litter? names? origin?

any info will be greatly appreciated....

Old pair Kimba and Delilah were imported along with a female tiger and the pair of tigons from the ex-safari park (presumably Bullens) based in Victoria. All were in their teens when brought in 2000.

Young female Millie was imported from New Zealand in 2000/1. Partly hand-reared she was maybe 6-9 months old, not fully-grown.

Any other individuals have been bred at the park.

Cannot quite remember - it was a small park (possibly Zion?). Somewhere which has allowed adult lions into the house with the family, if that helps.

Millie was born at Paradise Valley Springs in Rotorua

They have a pride of lions (possibly barbary) and sent a lioness called Scarlett (now renamed Shania) to Zion Wildlife Gardens where she became their breeding female.

Millie has a twin brother called Max who is now the dominant male at Paradise Valley Springs. Max and Millie's mother Honey still lives there too.

Check them out at: Paradise Valley Springs Wildlife Park

Thanks Jones, I predicted that because the last several zoo trips I have seen no Lionesses,
I wonder when did the last female die?

i thought the females were transferred to Werribee...

"Gopha" and "Jespah" sisters born at Melbourne in 1990 to "Juliana" and Jespah's daughter "Jarrah" born in 2000 were moved. "Juliana" died either just before or just after the move...

can anyone confirm or correct that info?

Are Werribee planning to breed their Lions? They have a valid pride, but I guess there is always something else, Jones I think you are on to something there, I haven't got no knowledge of Lions, but I think that could be the case, I took a picture of the plaque in front of the Lions at Werribee about 3 years ago Its blurred but I think you can make out that Jarrah came from Melbourne and as such with another Lion,

don't know werribee's breeding plans.... im pretty sure their males are "Tombo" and "Tonyi" - brothers born at the Philadelphia Zoo in the USA in 1996. they bred at Auckland Zoo and have offspring and relatives at Taronga, Adelaide, Auckland, Wellington, Monato Zoos so their genes are fairly well represented in the region.... maybe they won't breed for that reason.

The boy's mother, grandfather (on their mum's side) and grandmother (on dad's side) are white lions.

I know that lions were bred to Yizi (Amali) at Adelaide Zoo in 03/04 - anyone know what happened to these cubs?

I know out of the litter of four (born Jan 2004) one cub died soon after birth. The remaining three were two males and a female but I don't know where they went to! I know the female definately went to another zoo but the males may have stayed? Has Amali's sister from the same litter, Kutaza bred?

i know the zoo have 3 lions (1.2.0) Mujambi, the male from Mogo, and Yizi and Kutaza... all of the cubs must have either been transferred or died. as far as i know Kutaza has not had any calves.

"Kiamba" at Monarto Zoo - anyone know if this female is the Yizi 2004 cub?
