melbourne's elephants...

18-02-2008
mek kapah, like all the elephants, was assessed by these "german experts" we hear so much about and unfortunately had cysts. she is apparently being treated to permanently shut-down her reproductive system.
dokkoon is not 17, she is only about 14. last i saw, many months ago, the zoo was in the process of introducing the cows to the bull and dokkoon particularly was showing plenty of interest.
unlike taronga, melbournes elephants didn't know each other and whilst kapah was living with the other cows within a couple of days, their bull is fully grown so the process has been much slower. thus they were probably set back somewhat in that they had to minimise any risks.
still, i commend melbourne for seeing integration of their older cow with the other elephants as a priority.
