that is so exciting. I love quolls! Where (and when) did the male come from? You should definitely put a photo up of the mum surrounded by cute baby quolls when they are old enough to be out of the pouch.
The male probably arrived a little after your visit. He is from Chris Humphrey. We saw mating activity as soon as he arrived but no babies, then no more activity so we thought we had missed it this year. Yes it would be really cute to get a photo of baby quolls riding on Mums back. Looking forward to it.
Updated photo of Baby Quolls Another photo of the baby quolls, this time at about 4 weeks. As can be seen fur is now starting to grow with the spots now visible.
At the start of the Wallaby Walk near the Tasmanian Devils, on the same side of the path as the old aviaries. We decided to build three new aviaries to replace them. This is the first one and we decided to make it OBP only after observing other birds interfere with their ground foraging. The other two aviaries currently being finished are one for kingfishers and a walk-in aviary 15x5x5m themed around Woodlands. Birds to be exhibited include regent honeyeaters, superb parrots, white-browed woodswallows, diamond firetails, musk lorikeets, and black-winged stilts.
Sounds great MRJ. I visited in early September and didn't notice any construction. Looking forward to the Woodland Walk-through, that should be awesome. Is it going to be built over existing scrub, or planted from scratch?
We work fast. Unfortunately as we are making the aviaries rat proof we have quite a bit of landscaping to do.
Here is a photo of the Woodlands Aviary under construction, photo dated 25th September. It is currently fully wired and painted. Between this post and my last I have been down to the spot-tailed quolls to look at the kittens on their first trip out of the nest box. Very cute.
New Kingfisher Aviary New aviary for sacred kingfishers opened today. Effectively it is a 3.6x3.6x3.6m cube. Pictured are the aviary, and a kingfisher released into it today.
The quolls are doing well. Here is a photo of one emerging from the nestbox I took with my phone about an hour ago. All 5 were out and you can just make out one or two more. They become independent of mum around 100 days of age. The sixth one, which we are hand rearing is also doing well.
Victorian Tourism Award Moonlit Sanctuary just won the Victorian Tourism Award in Ecotourism. Congratulations to Halls Gap Zoo, who were finalists in their category.
New walk-in aviary Keepers releasing birds into their new walk-in aviary. We'll be giving the birds a few days to settle in before letting people in.
The new aviary now open for visitors. Species currently in it include swift parrots, musk lorikeets, white-browed woodswallows and black-winged stilts. More birds will be added over the next few months.
Obviously overtired. Quite correct they are superb parrots. Swift parrots are planned but not here yet.
