Oryx death
Old 23-06-2007

Hi Guys,

All these zoo deaths got me to thinking and I was having a look at Taronga's website (planning a trip there next month).

On their website (animal deaths 2005-2007) they have stated they lost a scimiter-horned oryx to because they 'accidentally sustained a fractured femur during a veterinary procedure.' The animal was later euthanised.

How does a veterinary procedure end up in a broken femur?

I've got little idea or inside information on this, but was hoping someone would be able to enlighten me?

Thanks,
Rayles

quite easily i imagine. the information doesnt say whether the animal sustained the injury whilst under the effects of sedation, or before or after sedation. the zoo takes all precautions during these procedures, but as with any animal, some react differently to drugs. this accident may have happened in the recovery stage, antelopes being panniced whilst wearing off the effects of the drug.
these animals are built to last but bone fractures in antelopes, equids (including domestic) and even cattle can and do occur. im not zoo vet, but im guessing that antelope would fit in to the medium risk category (with primates and carnivores low risk) and animals like giraffe, elephant and hippo high risk.
another tragedy, another feather in PETA'S cap. im only guessing but.
