Would anyone know if the Perth zoo is including its young female elephant in the current AI program?, with the wonderful news of the three females on the east coast that are pregnant got me thinking of the female in Perth, it seems very little is heard about whats happening over there

perth was in active consulation with the Berlin experts a few years ago now, but things have quietened down a bit. the strategy, im sure did involve Bong Su at some stage but there were difficulties, to put it diplomatically.
AI with elephants is still far from guaranteed too; 2 successful attempts in Sydney and Melbourne but in the US' National Zoo what would of been the third attempt with Shanti has failed leaving just her 6 year old bull calf Kandula to carry on her lineage at this stage.

I hope the young Perth female can still be included in the National breeding program

I agree Mark 'cos it seems an aweful waste to import four elephants and have only two left with no hope of breeding any time soon.

As we know elephants are not so easy get these days so every one that is breedable in Aust is a plus as we have so few here its a bonus, as far as I know there are only the three Asian bulls in Oz. I do hope these two at Perth are included into the National breeding program as it would be a bit of a waste in terms of bloodlines/breedings, From what I have read on the net females are best bred before they turn 25
