That's sounds like an awesome plan, but of course the pairs would have to be made up of non-related individuals, unless the next is also female, the two sisters could live peacefully together.
But I'm sure the zoos want to breed successfully as much as possible,

Thank you ZooPro, that is good. Sorry if I started a rumour however the article definately gave that impression.

pygmy hippos at taronga
Old 09-11-2008

they have 1.3.0 pygmy hippos at taronga zoo currently

they have timmy and petre, which are the parent of motifa! timmy and petre are housed opposite the tahr mountain in the old malayasin tapiar exhibit. and there is another much older female hippo katie living in the african waterhole area of the zoo. timmy and petre are not housed together - they get rotated on and off display.

i have seen the little one at 7 days old - shes a gem and sooooooo cute... go TZ ungies!

That is disappointing - we were there on Saturday and went looking for the Pygmy Hippo, but couldn't see her anywhere.

At least I managed to get some nice photos of the Crimson Chat

Is Katie at 35 considered post-reproductive?

i think she is. i think Timmy is 23 years of age as he was born at Taronga, therefore i wouldnt be at all suprised if he wasnt related somehow to Katie.

katie hippo
Old 10-11-2008

katie is way to old to breed!

there was a female that bred in omaha zoo a few months ago who is a couple of years older then petre and everything went well, so petre has another one or two in her!!!! they stay with there mother for about 18 months.

i really dont think timmy is related to katie...

it would be interesting to find out what the family tree for pygmy hippos is in this country. for many years Taronga Zoo bred this species, but im not sure how many have been imported into the country in recent decades. im aware of a mid 1980s import from Honolulu though with the export of calves, loss of animals to disease and old age it would be interesting to see what lines have collapsed.
