Zoo protest 'was to cause alarm' - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

A protest outside of Melbourne Zoo...by the employees! That's not something that one sees very often. Supposedly the staff have been offered a 4% wage increase, but they are obviously not content with that amount.

A longer article:

Thanks snowleopard,

I personally think they had the right to protest, if i got 40% less of the pay i was supposed to get, I would be pretty angry.

Well if they do decide to look elsewhere they would want to stay out of queensland. They award there for zookeepers start at around $500 for level 1 up to $663.9 per week for level 6 for a 38 hour week. They would probably make a bit more with over time. That is not including super and other contributions but still, to be on $36,000 for an appentice keeper, I'd be cheering. that's 20 grand more than your average apprentice.

However a pay rise wouldn't be a bad idea for a job that involves so much hard work.

All zookeepers have spent either hundreds of dollars on certificates, or thousands of dollars on university tuition fees. Many are well educated, with degrees in either biology or zoology, and so the amount of money that they are making doesn't accurately reward the efforts that they've put into their job. On the other hand, getting $40,000 or so per year to do what you've always dreamed of doing is a pretty sweet deal. It's a tough call...

over the years life science staff at taronga have gone on strikes, like refusing to pick up poo and there have been other well publicised human resources issues but I believe ZPB of NSW may be the, if not one of, the highest paying zoos to work for in the region. Even so its not a great deal of money for a very hands-on job but there are many jobs out there like that, and I guess few jobs would match the stimulation or brag appeal of working for a zoo, even if it does involve cleaning up alot of ****

What does the pay at Adelaide have to do with Melbourne Zoo visits?
