its a shock and im saddened to report Mr. Irwin passed away this morning of the queensland coast where he was killed by a sting ray barb to the chest.

Rest in Peace Steve and thankyou.

i carnt beleive it, it the most upsetting news i have ever heard, to many of us he was the man who said crikey, but to me he was a hero and an amazing man putting wildlife first.

I was totally shocked by this. I have stated in the past that I had issues with his manner but I have always had the greatest respect for his work and dedication to conservation. Australia and the enviromental/conservation movement has lost a truely great man. I am only glad that he died doing what he loved best, and not by being hit by a car or something like that. To his family, Terri and the children and to all the staff at the zoo you have my condolances.

I am stunned by the news of Steve Irwin's passing. He was an Ozzie icon for conservation and particularly well liked for his enthusiasm and passion for Australian wildlife and conservation. He will be sorely missed ......

Shocking and saddening news indeed. But i guess he died doing what he loved most. Rest in peace Steve and deepest condolences to his family.

He will always be remembered for his contributions to conservation.

Singapore Zoo has lost a dear friend and ally. His spirit will live on here in Singapore through the amazing Australian Outback exhibit which he helped created.

I agree - very sad. I had a lot of respect for Steve's passion and enthusiasm for animals - despite his antics.

I only hope that his family can continue on the great work he started.

Even though I am one of those people who got annoyed with Steves mannerisms , style ,and occasional stunt , I still had much respect for him in his work for Conservation
Particularly the fact that he built HUGE enclosures for the elephants , but also trying to educate people about snakes and crocodiles etc .

I am very sorry to hear that he died -- he still had a lot of potential
It made front page headlines on all NZ major papers , and was the anchor story in the TV news last night -- so he was well known here in NZ also .

My thoughts go towards Terri and the rest of the Australia Zoo staff . I hope that they keep up and expand on the good work that Steve started in the conservation and zoo field .
Although I do not think he was the "greatest" I will still consider Steve Irwin to be one of the Worlds best zoologists , alongside David Attenborough and the like . I am sorry that his life was taken so early

well i was never slow to criticise steve irwin, particuarly his politcal beliefs, but in the end he was a man who made a terrific contribution to conservation, particuarly here in australia and i respected him enormously for that. i liked his straight forward "if i wanna protect it i'll buy it" attitude and his anthropomorhised attitude of animals only ever worked to their benifit - the australia zoo animals have some of the most spacious and cared for homes in the zoo world.

whether i personally enjoyed watching his programs or not is irrelevant - he was a dedicated conservationist and australian wildlife is at a great loss to have lost one of its biggest supporters (even if he did feel the need to wrestle them now and again!).

i feel really sorry for his family.

Steve was certainly one of a kind, love him or loath him…….he was passionate and certainly cared about wildlife and conservation. He will be sorely missed and I feel for his family. Such a tragedy.

Hopefully his work will carry on……according to Discovery they will be setting up a fund to carry on his work. Lets hope they do.
